mam HARDSHIPS AWAIT ... fiMHD ON BORDER ) \ ' ' i, Will Have to Unck-rgo Strenuous Hardening Process at Once. Blistered (Vet and sunburned nosewill be prevalent among the National Guardsmen within two days after they reach the border. The harden ing processes will begin at once ana will continue until they are fit to duplicate the marches mat'o by Gen. Pershing's men on the trail of Fran-| cisco Villa. Unless circumstances make it impossible, some part of each command will go on a hike each day. These marches will he made under conditions such as prevail in active campaigns. The guardsmen probably will be started with a march of five miles carrying full kit and the regulation amount of amn u: ition. The distance will be increased as the men improve in condition until they are able to cover 30 miles a day. Equal attention will be paid to conditioning the cavalry and artillery horses and pack mules, while the civilian truck drivers now handling the big motor transport units will put their machines to every test that might be encountered in time of war. Care will be taken in conditioning! the men from Northern States, as they probably will feel acutely the heat of the Texas border until acclimated. The Illinois and Wisconsin troops will he wrapped in luxury, compared to the other guardsmen, if. as is probable, they are to be quartered near the camp at Fort Sam Houston, now bring used as a citizens' military training camp. The civilian camp, which will ciose June 30, is a model one, equipped with everything known to military science for the health and comfort of the men. Arrangements are being made for a Central Red Cross supply station, which will cure for the eastern section of the American line. The western section will be supplied from a depot in El Paso. o The Russians continued to record successes, some of great importance along their whole front from Riga to the Carpathians. j o The Strong Withstand the Heat of Summer Better Than the Weak Old people who are feeble, and younger people who are weak .will be strengthened and enabled t? go through the depressing heat of summer by taking regularly Grove's Tasteless Chill Tonic. It purifies and enriches the blood and builds up the whole system. 50c. o IN SOUTH CAROLINA ONLY we paid to 8 beneficiaries ir. May over $21,000.00. To arrest rheumatism it is quite as important to improve your general health as to purify your blood, and the cod liver oil in Scott's Emulsion is nature's great bloodmaker, while its medicinal nourishment strengthens the organs to expel the impurities and upbuild your strength.
