nro STAGE IS SET FOR j BATTLE AT BORDER | Villa's Fate as Leader in Mexico Hinges On Outcome AMERICAN TROOPS KEEP THE BOUNDS 1 Five Thousand United States Soldiers Massed on Arizona Line. Douglas, Ariz.?Preparations were completed last week for the third battle at Agua Prieta, Sonora, between various factions, since Madero opened the war in Mexico five years ago. Five thousand American troops with 16 three-inch guns are mobilized here to see that the Mexicans shoot only on their own side of the. boundary. Carranza troops under Gen. P. Elias Calles, lie behind an elaborate system of earthworks awaiting the approach of the Villa army. Fighting may begin or may be do- . layed. That is dependent upon the plans, disposition and condition of ] Villa's troops, but the outcome probably will determine whether Sonora shall come under sway of Villa or whether he will be driven as a fugitive , across the American border. ^ TT?i - i: A .*? i i i:i...i.. nUSLlllLlCS, IlUWfVtT, SWeillliU llKUiy ! to begin quickly, for at last reports j Villa's forces were scattered from 15 ( to 25 miles south of Agua Prieta, in a region where little water is available | Carranza forces under Gen. Diguez , were imported to be working in behind , them. The Carranza garrison at Augua Prieta numbers hardly more than 3,700 effective men. The reinforce- ' ments that Gen. Calles expected ton come from Piedras Negras, over the I1 American territory, with 14 cannon! J and 14 machine guns can not reach ' here for two or three days. This was the word brough by Gen. ( Benjamin Hill of Carranza's army,! who made it known that he does not., intend to join the Carranza forces but that he will become one of the interested non-combatants on the Ameri . i ? _r 1i._ i v-uii smt- ui uie uouiuiaiy. Whether Villa is in Senora leading in person the army of invasion, was I not definitely known heie, but his fate was generally believed to hinge on the imminent battle. If he wins he probably will remain a more or less important factor in the; Mexican siuation?at least in Sonora, If he loses, many American and Mex-^ icans predict he will find the nearbyj boundary a convenient exit from Mexican affairs. There is some apprehen-l sion among residents here on account ' of experiences during previous battles j| at Augua Prieta, when stray bullets I from the Mexican side killed five per- j sons and wounded twenty others here. J Although undoubtedly outnumbered j and probably outmatched in artilleryJ Gen. Calles regards his position as impregnable. The town lies on an emi-1 nence, the easiest point of attack being to the eastward. Here Carranza engineers have devoted most attention to fortifications. Villa is reliably reported to have 28 field guns, some as large as four-inch j pieces, though these are belived to be; hardly more than fifty per cent ofli- j cient. His army is estimated at from j 0,000 to 12,000 men.
