" 1 djtSSMk: THURSDAY, SEPT.-16, 1915 Hope deferred is hope still. 1 ( o Laziness is the easy way of life. o Immagination has had its part to play in hard times. o ! What profits is it to do such great things in talk only? o Germany will weep for centuries to come over a lost cause. o Some people aim well but always manage to miss the mark. o j The best way is the straight direct way to the point to Lc attained. o Some men mil off flip until last, while others take the best first. o Labor brings its own reward to man both as to his mental and physical states. o No action ever performed by any man was as easy to him as it looked at first. o Men look at things through colored spectacles when their own interests are concerned in it. j ?<> ' Of what use is it to try to make a man with a torpid liver see any of the beauties of nature ? ?c? ! The main purpose of a printed page is to enable one to get some benefit from the knowledge of another. o The man who is so anxious to run the whole world is the one who would have a collision in about one minute, j o In most professions, good judgment and discretion, which can be used in behalf of others, is the most valuable asset. I ,?o The standing of a community is determined to a great extent by the number and kind of its school houses and churches. o The well-read farmer will get along better than the one who never reads anything. The reason is that he has more information. i o Some men can finish a thing with a rush once they get started at it; the great trouble with many is to ever get them started at it. : ui As to idle gossip be like the weftnK er. There is nothing more talked about than the weather, and it cares just about the least. o The chronic dyspetic sees everything in the world as it were through jaundiced glasses. Even the whitest snow looks yellow to him. o The farmer who heeded the universal advice last Spring to plant more grain and forage crops will be better off whoii Wittier times come along. o It will fail to rain some times wKen the clouds are darkest; arid again rain drops will fall from a bright sky. It does not do to trust appearances too much. o You can't explain jus* how the moon could have anything to do with a crop, yet some farmers will persist in planting their gardens in the moon rather than in mother earth. o This is the paper that covers, Yes, covers all that you do, Covers the evening and the midnight, And blankets the morning dew. o What has become of the old fashionpd mnn rtv woman w?nl/l ,.r?_ > fuse to give advice as to how to bring up th children, when it was well known that they had never had any ? o The ruthless hand of war has caused proud nations to bow in the dust; still there are some things even worse than war, and mankind has had to contend with them since the beginning of time. o One misfortune does not follow another as a matter of course as some people think. It is said that misfortunes do not often come singly, hut this is because one misfortune is likely to cause another especially when effects are unforeseen, By using larger type magazines, of which we have plenty in the shop, we could fill the paper each week with much less effort, but the total amount , of news matter published would be much less, and our subscribers would i thereby get much less for their money, o ? According to the report of the experts appointed by the United States health department, to study the causes 1 and prevention of pellagra, the thing to do if you fear this disease is to cat 1 beans, peas, lean meat,.eggs and milk, ' and among these articles of diet they , :laim that beans and peas are the best. The people will take part in another 1 fair next month. Nothing is more intresting and instructive when run along the right lines. Let every farmer take pride in furnishing the best for the exhibits and thereby add to the value of the show as well as to his experience in producing fine crops. o If any of our subscribers would like to have a different type face in the printing of this paper they have never said so. On the other hand we have heard many of them speak of the great improvement in the Herald during the last two years, and they stated that they admired the fresh new faces in which the paper appears each week. Haris of that state will include the bill providing for a state warehouse system in his call for an' extraordinary session of the Georgia general assembly to be issued shortly for the purpose of considering the appropriation bill, which failed of passage last session on account of the fight made on the prohibition question o AN EXPLANATION. We as a committee of New Light Baptist Church, at Gurley, S. C., in reply to an article in last week's issue of the Herald signed by Mr. O. M. Watts in regard to Brother Adams, we beg to say that we are very sorry that Mr. Watts got offended as he did. As Brother J. J. Adams is a Baptist preacher from Whi?eville, N. C., he is our pastor at New Light Church and a faithful worker for Christ, we welcome him in our midst any time and will say to all of God's people tha* you will do well to'take him into youi homes and treat him as a preacher and a man of God. He has just closed a series of meet ings with us, and done a good work has led several into the Church and many received Christ as their Savior. As to his character it is unsurpassed. He is faithful to his duties an' we believe that his robe will be spotless and white as snow. We further extend him a call for next year and invite all who will come to his services.
