MAYOR RESENTS GRAFT CHARGES ^ (Charleston Evening Post.) Mayor Grace yesterday stated that he had been accused behind his back of misappropriating funds to the amount of $30,000 in the handling of the city's receipts from its liquor business fines, and that he had been i accused on the authority of Alderman W. H. W. Buck, ward alderman from IWard 12. This statement came in connection ^fcwith a general review of a r umber of rumors directing ohaiges of graft against his administration, and was made before City Council at the conclusion of a regular session in the Council Chamber, City Hall. Alderman Buck was not present at the meet ing today. DEATH OR MRS. W. C. GRAHAM, AT TABOR, N. C. Miss Laura Ellen Gore, daughter of Dr. D. N. Gore, M. D., and Sarah A. Gore, was born November 14th> 1871. Posessing a genial spirit, large sympathy and a helpful disposition, she 0 was early recognized as a remarkable young lady having many friends. November 27, 1893, she was happily married to Mr. William Charles Graham of Loris, S. C., but for many years they have lived at Tabor, N. C. She has ever been the devoted wife, the loving mother and the guiding star of their happy home exhibiting all ^those queenly virtues of hospitality and unselfish devotion that makes a great life and a charming home. While Mrs. Graham belie/ed the home to be woman's greatest empire of usefulness, yet she was never too i i-" ? ? ... uusy to serve ner neighbors in the most self-sacrificing way. Was any sick, She was the first jjto go, carrying sunshine and sympathy so gracious in such an hour. Was any in distress? She was there with comfort and relief. Was any discouraged and down-cast? Her smile and good cheer could drive away the clouds. Perhaps her hand soothed more fevered foreheads than any other in all this County. Early in life she became a Christian ^Ind united with the Missionary Baptist Church. And while loving all Christians, she gave herself unsparingly to her church. No sacrifice was too great, no burden too heavy to bear for her church. Her pastor's burdens were shared by her, and her prayers and council never failed him. She was~president of the' Ladies ociety, which made it possible to erect the new pastorieum for the church last year. Though frail and feeble at the time, she always said we! must pro forward. Having heavy responsibilities slv?i naturally clung- to life saying there j was much good she wished to see ac-; complished yet; and if she might be; Strong enough she desired to render much more service for her Lord. I>ut her gracious work of loving service i was done, and on Saturday June 26, 1915, we watched her beautiful and now glorified spirit depart; like the1 white sails of a ship moving gently' out of sight, her gentle soul was' tuning, going to that sure haven where| xhe weary are at rest. She was a great sufferer during her long illness, exhibiting marked patience and meek submission. Two weeks before the end she had made plans with her I .? family for her departure. With faith serene and hope almost growing into sight,' she faced the future without fear and with readiness to go. The end was beautiful nml crowning a great life with a glorious victory. The lips moved but no word we hoard. Was she even now speaking wUh her Saviour. One wave of pain shook her like the gentle ripple the waves. Again she slumbered. The lips moved. One wave of the hand as if to becon us a last farewell.' and she was gone?gone to join thc! loved ones on the other shore, gone to i be with Christ forever-more. Washington.?Information confirming reports that England may soon put ^otton on her contraband list has reached the state department from official sources, it was learned. An informal protest to the British foreign office is being* considered, according to authentic reports. This would precede a formal note. President Wilson and the state department are daily in receipt of appeals and protests from cotton interests regarding the obstructions already instituted by England against cotton commerce. A general statement of the European war situation as it stood at the end of last week, was reported in the news despatches as follows: Heavy fighting is in progress irv Bosnia and Herzegovina, in Northwest Russia and Poland, in Asiatic Turkey, and probably upon Gallipoli peninsula, where the Allies lately have landed large reinforcements. Official reports disagree as to results. Although the Montenegrins claim that in Bosnia ami _ _ ?...M ?. a. v * UV ^ V/ T ?u? they have won successes in artillery and infantry engagements near Gorasda and Gasko, it is in the Russian report that the most momentous happenings are chronicled. Petrograd declares the Germans in the Riga district o! Northwest Russia near Kovno and in the Yieprz and Bug regions have been repulsed with heavy casualties. The Germans, on their part, assert they have occupied Lukow, forty miles northwest of Ivangorod, and Zambrowa and the Russians are in retreat along the entire front between the Bug and the Parazew, with Von Mackensen following them. Vienna also adds her claim of continued victories in the Vieprz and Bug districts. Of the situation near Riga, Berlin asserts that it remains unchanged. According to Constantinople, four Allied attacks against Ottoman positions on Gallipoli peninsula were put down. Paris, referring to the fighting in the Argonne, says the French recaptured part of the lost trenches.
