DECLARES WE SHOULD ARM AGAINST WAR President of Princeton University Urges Wise Preparedness Against It OPPOSES DOCTRiiNIES OF SOME PEACE LOVERS Says Future is Dark and Mysterious, Must Become AJert JNow. The Lake Mohonk Conference on Internation Arbitration mot at Mohonk Lake last week and the proceedwar and period of great uncertainings were interesting in this time of ties. Dr. John drier Hibben, president of Princeton, stirred the conference by taking issue with pacifists who favor disarmament. He advocated "a wise preparedness of our military forces in the United States." "I do not advocate preparedness for war," he said, "but preparedness against war?a preparedness which in the event of the catastrophe of war itself will prevent the enormous enitial sacrifice of human lives which has characterized every war in which the United States have been engaged throughout our past history. one can b<- so blind re carding the significance of preset _ coma lions as to take the position that a grave national emergency is not at least a possibility. I am not in sympathy with the peace propaganda which is being prosecuted in many of our schools, so far at least as it endeavors to quicken the peace sentiment by impressing upon the minds of the young children the economic losses of war." Dr. Hibben declared that on fallacy tending to obstiuct the progress of peace was "that this present terrible war has developed certain practices and usages which will revolutionize the accepted restrictions of international law so that hereafter all obligations of nation to nation in a state of war will be swept away." "We as a nation are looking into a future that is dark and mysterious," tvjiH luiiru. in tnu nigii tension of international hate and international suspicion the most insignificant incident may chance to precipitate for us a national catastrophe. And in the great immergency if it should come what wiM we say. Peace. Peace at any price ? "By all means let us pay any price whic can buy peace-restraint of passion, long su erance, sacrifice of material wealth or of every personal convenience and comfort. Let us sacrifice all, everything which can buy peace. But let us not forget that there are some things which can not buy peace. If we sacrifice them in order to secure rmooo f L /-v r?/%o / ./% 1 - uif [jcauc tuu^ suujjni comes before us the veriest torment of a living hell. We dare not trade honor for peace, we dare not betray duty in order that we may bargain for peace. We dare not indulge ourselves in the enjoyment of the blessings of peace while we turn deaf ears to the cry of distress or to the summons of a righteous cause." Never in the 21 years of its existence had the Lake Mohonk conference heard such a call to arms. The Princeton President's appeal aroused intense interest and discussion among more than 200 delegates. The conference was opened by Daniel Smiley who, as usual, was host tc all the members of the conference and their wives. The President's address was delivered by John Hnssett Moore former counsellor to the State Depart ment. Other speakers at the opening session were Thro Marburg, of Ballimon former minister to Belgium, and Johi Barrett, director general of the Pan American Union. o - Potash Not Needed, The Wintrop College Agricultura classes are now studying the strikinj results to be seen in the 18 oat plot now heading up. We sympathize and mourn with them in their sad afi.iction, but we must all bow to the arbitrament of death. Like her scriptural name-sake, Naomi, was the exemplification of many unique attributes.
