WithI out accusing Thaw or any of his intimates of participation in the plot, the local authorities sand they had reason to believe Chat plans had been u * laid to take Thaw from his guard on ^ tjie way to court here, place him in I San automobile and hurry him to the first train for Virginia. According to the sheriff, the plan letter written to Assistant District Attorney Frederick J. Groeht of New York, by Louis Weinrop of Norfolk. t' "A man comes over to me and he said I should go to New York when Harry Thaw comes up on the 22nd !\ of April and he will give me two more \ men and they will have an automobile to take Harry Thaw away when LA he comes to court room to another state and he offered me one thousand if, dollars and all expenses and a secui JJp rity for any accident happens to me Jr* in any responsible place, but 1 refused B" him the job because he wanted me to go at once with him to New York, but I wanted him to give me $50 heft fore I go with him. "He will not want to do that; he ft only wantad to pay me car fare to New York and go there with him to his office in New York. This man is a B 0 detective, but he travels from one city ih to another. I know him, but 1 can't U, write you in this letter who he is. K But if I could see you personally I I will tell who he is; if you want me 1$ you could wire me at once on your I i; expense and I will come to New ^ft' ^ Quick Rising Yeast Bread. 1/^ Rock Hill, April 26.?The Women's Club of Aragon Mills at Rock Hill had H.1 a lesson in bread-making recently. Yeast bread may be made and back ed within three hours if the amount of veast to flour be increased and the I|\ bread risen in a bowl set in a pan of warm water. The water must be A ^ kept moderately hot 'j But the average housekeeper is too I busy a woman to devote three hours to a club meeting. So Miss Mary E. r,: Frayser, of the Home Economics Ex? tension Department of Winthrop College, made the bread, let it have its I* first rising, kneaded it the second | time and then presented each club B ^ member with her little loaf to take m home for its second rising and bakK ing. They were as pleased as chilB dren and promised to substitute yeast bread for baking powder biscuit sometimes. B o I Some' Excitement. Orangeburg is having its little : round of excitement. Former North Carolina Congressman Commits Suicide?Found With Shot Gun Wound in His Face. Faison, N. C.?John M. Faison, former Congressman from the 3rd North Carolina district, was found [lead in the bath room of his home with a shotgun wound in his tace. Members of his family stated that Mr Faison had committed suicide. Mr Faison had been in poor health for some time. o Baby Health Conferences. Rock Hill, April 26.?Three years and a half ago the first "Better Baby Health Contest" in the United States was held. It centered attention upon the child and was the means of dis seminating knowledge concerning its proper care. All over the land other contests have been held. Bulletins have been published in order that scientific information might be put into the hands of parents who want enlightenment. Many of the leading magazines are devoting space to the discussion of questions relating to the health and well-being of children. The mother of a very delicate elevenyear-old boy said rcently: "There is so much more knowledge concerning children abroad in the land today than when my boy was born." This is true. And it is wonderful to see how "Baby Health Cnotests" have evolved into " "Baby Health" Conferences; how little of emulation mars the examination of children; how earnest is the spirit of inquiry which pervades the coming together of parents and children, of physicians, trained nurses, and social workers. South Carolina has held many "Baby Health Contests" within the last two years. In some instances, as one result, groups of mothers have banded themselves together for serious study of problems of child life. Miss Locke, director of the kindergarten in Columbia, is leader of such a group. The tendency is for the contest to develop into a conference and for the physical examination to be followed up by study. This is a hopeful sign of the times. This Spring will see active measures taken to promote the well-being of children under school-going age. The medical inspection for children of school-going age is a splendid law. The babies must be reached, also. Greenville opened the Spring "Campaign for Better Babies." The Civic Improvement League of that city devoted its first birthday to them and is planning a "Baby Conference. " The Charleston Club women had a March Child's Welfare Meeting, and will also have a "Baby Conference." Latta examined twenty-four children on Saturday, April 10. Kingstree had a "Baby Conference" Thursday, April 15. \ Club women, school authorities the Home Economics Extension Deaprtment of Winthrop College, and an interested public all help the good work go on. o Funston in Charge. Fighting the fly after it is grown is work that involves immense labor in proportion to the comparatively simple and easy task of killing the maggots and preventing the eggs from hatching. The most effective #ay of fighting flies is by fighting them in their breeding places.
