the American Submarine and the loss
of her entire crew will probably never
be known. The modern submarine is i

It is a strange thing but we have
known men whose lives apparently

the smuttiest joke you ever heard in
your life and laugh at it. Do they
really approve of such things? It is

The only thing to do concerning
the despatch of busines in the courts
is for the judges to insist that the
cases must be tried and disposed of.

All over this land the crv has arisen
that men find it impossible to get
cases tried in the courts and that
their rights suffer in the meantime.
Let the judges be willing to push the
lawyers to the trial of cases, and
make it an invariable rule that the
dockets must be cleared at every
term, and there will be quite a different
state of affairs in this country
in the course of only one year.

Charged with sending military information
to Germany by means of
invisible ink, three men have been
arrested and will be tried in a civil
court at Loudon. The authorities intimate
that the case is one of gravest
importance.

Caught Stealing.
Two negro girls, Lessie Newton
and Ruth Woodbury, turned out last
Saturday evening to replenish their
Spring Wardrobes by tho addition of
several dresses and articles of Springwear.
But they were short of money
with which to purchase these articles

ing they undertook to lift these things
from the stores. At the store of Nissen-Todd
Co., they were caught making
off with a dress. Again at the
store of the L. H. Burroughs Co.,
they made off with a dress and perhaps
some other articles of wear. The
proof was not sufficient to make out
a case against Lessie Newton in the
Burroughs case, but Ruth was fined
in the sum of $10.00 in that ease, in
the charge brought against them before
the Mayor in the Nissen-Todd!

the sum of ten dollars, one of them
pleading guilty before the Mayor in
this case. Quite a crowd of colored
people gathered at the City Hall on
Monday morning while these eases
were being tried.

Negro Who Shot Him Killed by
Fosse?Was a Tori or of Fugitives.
John Catlett Hobbies, State executioner,
who was shot Friday near
Pinewobd, in Clarendon County, by a
negro, Joel Green, a fugitive from
justice, whom he was pursuing, died
Saturday night at 7 o'clock at a hospital
in Columbia. Green himself
was shot to death that morning by
the deputy sheriff's posse after an
all night search in a swamp near
Pinewood. The negro wore a steel
breastplate and carried a shot gun
and two pistols.
"Governor, 1 was trying to do my
duty,'' said Mr. Robbins, as he was
being rushed to Columbia late Friday

Treasury officials last Friday were
predicting continued improvement in

country. Their optimism was based
on reports of eighty bank examiners
which the department has made public
in a statement declaring the recent
