Save and Bank? if the man who never saves could only be so fortunate as to see him self in the Mirror of the Future he'd quickly right-about-face and set forth to change the image by a program of consistent saving and banking. After the age of 55 the average man can no longer count himself as bing on the upgrade of ability and earnings. After that there comes a decline that is much more precipitous than the long incline which he traversed with such effort to reach his climax of natural power. Despite lessened earning power however, the latter years of your life may be the happiest if you will only provide for them as you approach them. It is no hardship to save something as you go along, and certainly you'll never regret it. It does no good to accumulate money, however, unless you are assured of its safety. An account in our hank is the protection you are looking for. You Are Most Cordially Invited to Become a Depositor. FARMERS & MERCHANTS BANK Conway, S. C. Can You Spoil? At Kokomo, tnd., a few days ago the superintendent of the schools hold a spelling contest. Every person of the city was eligible and six hundred took the test. Of that number only i.f-v made a perfect score. Newspaper men, doctors, lawyers, merchants, teachers and scholars sub- j mittcd lists of twenty words each and ; from that total, twenty words wcrej selected. The complete list with the number of times each word was misspelled follows: Miscellaneous, 804; calendar 821; parralicl, 278; privilege, 270; superintendent, 248; principle, 242; niece 224; lose, 201; separate, 10(1 disappoint, 177; disease, 1(54; principal 142; necessary, 127; business, 120; relieve, 125; receive, 100; truly 85; government, M; grammar, 71); believe 4 O. One woman, who made a perfect score, had been a servant for sixtythree years and had had only eight weeks schooling. A county oOicial who had been in business all his life missed every word. Another man only got one right. One woman missed all but three. Here are the words, arranged in the form of two sentences Hand this to a friend, ask him to dictate the sentences to you, write down the words and see how many you misspell : "The privilege of separating ninety mist-Miaiieuus cuienuars, arranged in two parrallel linos, was against the principles of the superintendent , so his niece, not to disappoint the go\ crnmcnt, nor cause it to .ose business, removed the principal calendars and thus relieved her uncle of a strain which might have brought on a disease. Then she believed it had become truly necessary for her to receive her instructions in grammar." lie Called Her Dow n. A choice bit of gossip has been going the rounds for the past week. The principal parties connected with the af fair are well known, which makes the story all the more sensational. A bus band and wife are mixed up in the scandal, and what makes it doubly startling is the fact that each of them has always had the entire respect of the community. As a matter of fact the bomb exploded at the home of this couple at the vc?v moment at which there had arrived at their house a party of twenty or twen ty-five of our best peep'o, wtio had gone there to surprise the couple on vhrir wedding aniversary. Neither of the principals expected company. The iiR^ftnialuYiont C fVio imagined when they heard the husband call hs wife down. He made no bones of it It was done openly and without even a hint of apology to the quests. The chocking part of it is the fact that everyone, even the closest friends of the couple, had no Men bu. that their homo life was ideal Nevertheless?and we have the host of authority for the story?when the cm puny arrived they were met at the door by the astonished husband. A - soon as the first greetings were over he said, "My wife i upstairs. 1 wiil call her down." An 1 he did.?Ivn. STATEMENT of (he condition of li c r rmc;s &. M"; chants 2>?i:tU, located at Conway.
