The faculty, oflicials of State and speakers made an innovation by wearing academic caps and gowns proper to such an occasion. At the exercises the governor, Lieutenant-governor, members of the Senate and the Lower House, several state and Suproi 10 Court officials, and representatives from many of the important institute u over the country, many of them meii of ...ational repute. At the afternoon exercises, which were held in the University chapei, Lieut. Governor Andrew J. Be viva, presided. Among the speakers were Mr. Haddon Johnson, for the student body; President J. Henry Harms, of Newberry College; Prof. LeConte F. Stevens, of Washington and Lee Unisersity; Chancellor James H. Kirkland, of Vanderbiit University, Dr. S. P. At the evening exercises held in the State House, Governor Richard Irvine Manning presided. This was the occasion of Dr. Currell's inaugural address, which was held those who heard it to be a clear indication of what the University's new executive head intends to stand for and piomulgte. Afterwards a smoker was held in the parlors of Flinn Hall for alumni and visitors when it was learned that the Alumni Association, having met in the morning, had expressed itself as favoring the institution of an Alumni Athletic Association in the near future.
