. AMERICANS HOME, EXCITING VOYAGE, LINER PHILADELPHIA ARRIVES IN NEW YORK WITH 100 ABOARD TELL ABOUT WAR. Americans in Europe Made a Mad j Rush to (Jet Back Home Out of the 1 Dangers of War?Baggage in Some i Cases Abandoned. ] The American Liner Philadelphia, with the first great crowd of Americans who rushed from Europe after war was declared, arrived in New York last week. There were 70.'1 persons in the cabin and .'109 in the steer-1 age. Virtually all were without baggage, many without money, and all told stories of hardships. The Philadelphia sailed from Southampton a few hours after England declared war on Germany. The first day out a fleet of French torpedo boats and three submarines were sighted. One of the torpedo boats hurried after the liner, the rest following slowly. Finally the torpedo boat?the 11 7?came alongside and ordered the Philadelphia to stop. The war vessel circled the liner several times, its officers looking closely at the faces of the passengers crowded on the decks. When the French naval officers were sure the Philadelphia was an American vessel and that the passengers were Americans, one of ^ them shouted in excellent English that the Philadelphia might proceed. Refugees in the steerage were given the freedom of the ship. The men were separated from the women, however, and in some cases husbands separated from their wives by this regulation. ^ As the Philadelphia ncared her pier the crowd waiting on shore shouted a welcome to the refugees. Then for a <.iuuiaer 01 an nour the whole river resounded with cheers. Hundreds on board had rushed from the interior of France and Germany, i y Travelers from Pai'is told of mobs ! swarming through the streets, break- ! ing windows and looting German j shops. Others told of Germans in the 1 French Capital being beaten by gendarmes and excited citizens. Streets near the railroad stations | i were piled high with abandoned bag- ; gage. So great was the rush of < Americans from France to England . < V. Ft PLATT. 1M I Established 1871 HRTTHS rnunre ? i c< * -? v. RICHARDSON, MARKET , ft Conway, ...-South Carolina Great Mid-S SPECIAL VALl Nissei SO u Til E R N COTTON CON G R ESS Will Aid in Plans and Cooperate With the Growers in Storing for Higher Market. The Southern Cotton Congress, after indorsing various plans for the relief of the crisis of the cotton market resulting from the European war, con eluded its sessions last week. The congress authorized various committees to cooperate with the federal and State authorities in their efforts to enable the cotton growers to weath er the finacial storm and secure a fair price for the present cotton crop. Foundation of Cotton. When the Leas owe lighthouse, England, was built on the sandy Wirral shore tho builders were puzzled by the lack of a suitable foundation for the masonry tower. An ingenious wav out of the difficulty was effected. In the vicinity an incoming ship, laden with a cargo of cotton, had gone ashore und had become a total wreck. The cotton was useless for its intended purpose, the bales were salvaged and dumped into the sand at the point where the lighthouse was to be erected. The fleecy mass settled into tho sand, and under compression became as solid as a rock, while its permanency was assured by its complete submersion. Tho stability of this strange foundation may bo gathered from tho fact that the tower erected thereon stood, and shed its welcome light regularly every night, for about a century and a half, only being extinguished two or three years ago, as it was no longer required. Crowds at Isle of Palms, With ideal weather conditions pre- ^ vailing, one of the largest crowds of j the season took advantage of tho op- I portunity to visit the Isle of Palms ; last Sunday and enjoy the surf bath- 1 ing, the excellent music and other attractions.
