"Lewis Marks, pure food inspector of the United States department of agriculture, Saturday seized 900 bush els of "misbranded oats" offered for sale in the Columbia markets. The seizure was made after an investigation and upon the testimony furnished by inspectors of the State department of agriculture. It was said that other seizures would follow if the grain companies continued to violate the State and federal laws by offering impure products. "The federal law is to be applied in every case," said commissioner Watson yesterday. During the past several weeks there have been heavy shipments of socalled oats, according to Commissioner Watson, into South Carolina. These shipments contain a portion of pure oats mixed with wild barley, wheat and weeds. Under the federal laws all shipments containing more than 5 per cent, foreign substance must be properly branded. Shipments with more than 5 per cent, foreign substance must be registered with the State department of agriculture as feedstuff's. There is a tax on the shipments. The interior shipments have been made in sacks of standard size and all shippers have been warned that seizures would follow if they continued to disregard the State feedstuffs law. Several cases were recently made by the department for "misbranding" oats. Last week inspectors of the State department of agriculture held up 900 bushels in Columbia and ater examination the stuff was seized.The lot seized contained 42.5 per cent foreign matter. * OCTOBER REMINDERS Arrange sheds and mows to feed shredded fodder to the stork?if you have never done so you will bo pleased with results, especially with the fine lot of manure you have to spread. You can very easily guess the nature of the replies to this question, for none of those present had much of an idea what a silo really is. After a short explanation it was agreed that nearly everyone present in reality had a silo of some kind. Some of these were used for saving fruits, corn, and others for preserving cabbage for future uf>e. ( We don't really speak of these as silos, but the effect 011 the saving of 1 these beds when placed in jars is the same as it is with corn when stored 1 in the silo; in other words, silage is green corn preserved by storing in an air-tight structure. There probably are very few farmer boys that do not remember some rainy , day or evening when all hands got j busy preparing the cabbage to fill the j kraut jar. Probably no thought was given the subject because it was a yearly task, and no one realized that in effect the saving of the cabbage by making it into kraut is the same as < making corn silage. It undoubtedly ( served a good purpose in keeping the 1 family in a healthy condition during < the winter months when other green 1 food was not available. The same is true of silage, which affords a succulent and nourishing feed for the livestock. There may be a question as to < whether all stock will eat the sour corn : silage, but give them a chance and this 1 ...ill V. i 1. 1 - - , ? e mullein wiii u?
