Hnppiness comes from within and never from without a man. * * * * The trouble with people is that their thoughts are small, and consequently everything that they do is small. * * * * Many a man or woman hfts draggod out miserable lives hunting for happiness outside of their own personalities. The trouble was from within them and not from without. ? ? * * The day of the sad and droll face is passing away. This is an age when mankind certainly has a reason for looking up, their faces reflecting the sunshine of Heaven. * * * Happiness lies in usefulness. The ; happiest man or woman in this world to-day is the one who has been able to make him or herself the most useful to the rest of humanity. , * * * * There is no telling where the spirit of public improvement may lead once it gets a good hold on the minds of the people. The main trouble in this ; place so far has been *o get it thor- | oughly aroused. * * * * Try to get the big idea in your head when it comes to the progress and improvement of your town. How small to stand up and claim that the town is not able. For heaven sake quit going about talking about it as if it were your bitterest enemy. Things amount in this world a good deal by reason of what is thought of them. * * * * One of the very first things a stran ger notices when leaving a large city and going into a small, is the trashy and dusty streets. Now there is no reason in the whole world why the streets and sidewalks in a small town the size of Conway should not be in as good condition and just as cleanly kept as those in. the largest city in the United States. As long as there are voters without a conscience, there will be frauds and perjuries committed in the elections in spite of every precaution that can possibly be placed in the statutes. t * The best cotton crop that Horry County has ever produced was raised during a year that was one of the driest That particular year will be remembered by every farmer. In the Spring it absolutely refused to rain. Everybody was blue. But when the crop of that year was gathered it was soon seen that the largest cotton crop ever raised in this section the State had been picked out. This year seems dry now and in many respects the outlook is discouraging. We are inclined to beiiere that the results will be satisfactory in the end. The United States Civil Service Commission announce an open competitive examination on the date and at the places named above, as a result of which it is expected to make certification to fill a vacancy in the position of rural carrier at Sanford, S. C., and other vacancies as they may occur on rural routes at post offices in the above named county, unless it is found to be in the interest of the service to fill any vacancy by reinstatement, transfer, or promotion. The compensation of a rural carrier is based upon the length of the route. Salaries range from $484 to $1,100 per year. Age, 18 to 55, on the date of the examination. The maximum age is waived in cases of persons honorably discharged from the United States military or naval service. An applicant must have his actual domicile in the territory supplied by a post office in the county for which the examination is announced. The examination is open to all male citizens of the United States who can comply with the requirements. Application Form 1341, and full in/ i lormauon concerning the requirements of the examination, can be secured from the secretary of the local examining board or the postmaster at any of the examination points named above, or from the United States Civil Service Commission, Washington, D. C. Applications should be properly executed and filed with the Commission at Washington. As examination papers are shipped direct from the Commission to the places of examination, it is necessary that applications be received in ample time to arrange for the examination desired at the place indicated by the applicant. The Commission will therefore arrange to examine any applicant whose application is received in time to permit the shipment of the necessary papers. An eligible register for the position of rural carrier for each county will be maintained. A person must be examined in the county in which the postoflfice that supplies his home is situated. As a result of such examination he may become eligible to appointment as rural carrier at any post office in such county. A rural carrier after one year's satisfactory service may be transferred to the position of clerk or carrier in a first or second class post office, to the position of railway mail clerk, or to other positions in the classified service, subject to such examination as may be required by the civil service rules.
