LARGE TIMBER TRACTS Situate in Floyds Township in This County, and in Columbus County, North Carolina, and in Marion County, This State, Are Involved in the Deal. There was recently concluded a large timber deal between the Gapway Lumber Company, of Fair BlulF, N. C., and the Montgomery Lumber Company, of North Carolina, by which the latter company acquires from the former large timber holdings lying in Floyds township in this county, aim uugc tracts 111 ivianun county, ami in Columbus county, N. C. The Gapway Lumber Company was incorporated and organized several years ago and erected a large plant at Causey station on the main line of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad betwen Fair Bluff and Nichols. The plant was never placed into ful opera tion it seems, but the company acquired large holdings in pine, cypress and poplar timber in that and the adjoining sections. By this deal which has just been concluded all of this property including the plant has been taken over by the Montgomery Lumber Company. The latter is a large corporation having various mills in North Carolina and doing a large business in lumber in that State. They will be an addition to the business interests of this section of North and South Carolina. George F. Alexander of Springfield, Mass., is the president of the Gapway Lumber Company. He is a gentleman of polished manners and is well known to many of the business men of this county. Lawn Festival on Friday Night. The Ladies' Aid Society of the Methodist church will hold a lawn festival next Friday night, May 29th, instead of Thursday night as previously announced. Note that it is tomorrow (Friday) night. It will be held in the Civic League Park. Strawberries, ice cream, cake, etc., will be served. S. F. Dusenbury and children of Toddville, visited Conway last week and took in the ball game between Conway and Georgotown. A Oompetive examination will be held at Conway on June 13th for the purpose of making certification for the rural carrier at Sanford, S. C. Mrs. C. H. Snider closed her school for little boys and girls last Friday with a picnic. It was a sea son of great enjoyment for the little tots. The steamer Burroughs will play i her part in moving the Irish potato crop this year to market. She is in charge of Capt. A. L. Thompson, and will freight the potatoes to Conway from all points below Conway. Harry Cushman has purchased the vacant lot next door to the Quattlebaum building on Main street, and it is stated on good authority that he will shortly begin the erection of a moving picture theatre on the property. The building will be finished and the theatre opened by the fall. It is a good location for a business of this kind. Tried to Shoot Chief L. R. Ambrose, and Got Sixty Days as a Result. When chief of police L.. R. Ambrose went last week to see about some disturbance at a negro house in the colored residence section, he stopped at the house of one William Mclver, a negro, his purpose being to obtain information. Mclver .did not com* out when summoned but fired off a pistol. Whether he intended to shoot Mr. Ambrose or not, the bullet passed near him. He claimed he merely shot to frighten the chief away. Later when the house was entered, Mclver was found dead drunk across the bed. He was arrested and placed in jail. Dusenbury whoso family they will visit for some time. Mr. Jackson is a retired Methodist minister, now at an advanced ago. He was the preacher in charge on the circuit now known as Bucksville circuit in the year 1880. He 1 .as decided to make Conway his home in the future and will move here as soon as a suitable home can be rented. George W. Capps and J. W. Capps had unusual luck in fishing in the Little Pee Dee last week. They went fishing on Wednesday of last week and returned home with 204 bream and mar-mouth. George Capps sent a dozen of his catch to his brother, Mr. W. 13. Capps here as a present. Garren & Vereen for the erection of a new brick building at Aynor, adjoining the building of the Farmers State Bank. The size on the outside will be 25x80 feet, and the front will be the same as the bank building mentioned. will be constructed of brick made by the Pee Dee Brick and Tile Co., the same that is being used in the erection of the Peoples Tobacco Warehouse and the Norton Drug ^ Company's building here. The work is to begin within a short time, and is to be finished by September 1st.
