*ts (H ^VOL XXIX. 1HW 7 TH E CONTRACT TO BE LET THIS g^^WEEK IN CHARLESTON FOR DEEPENING CHANNEL. Wt ? r WILL MOVE BV SUCTION' ill II tr/li*au1i/? \A7/\mL M nil VI 1 Ul II J III llllliv. I'l ?? WI l\" ing by Means of Large Steam Ennines, Wilt Move the Sand and the Mud From the Channel of the Stream?Man Here Looking After the Matter for Company. Captain Titscll, representative of a large dredging company of Savannah, (la., spent last week here making soundings of the Waccamaw 4f[iver, and gathering other data, and interviewing land owners along the Waccamaw River to obtain their consent to empty the sand and the mud on to the shores, in case his companty gets the contract. It appears that there is the sum of $40,000 which was appropriated and is now to lie spent in deepening the \ channel of the Waccamaw River so as make a ciear twelve foot channel from Lull Creek up to Conway. The contracts for thic work arc to be let ! in Charleston this week. The representative of the dredging company here last week will make a bid for the work, and it is likely to get the contract. His company, if it gets the contract, will move out the sand jknd the mud by suction from powermi pumps and hydraulic dredges, and the work will be rapidly pushed as soon as the contracts arc let. Mr. Titsell saw the following owners of lands along the stream, nil of whom consented of course, to this mud and sand being placed on the t<1in..nc<< 1 p- / '_ I I : uuui bO UU1I * M i i' I l . The representative of this Savannah company came here from Georgetown with Capt. Joe Lucas, the latter being acquainted with the !river and the circumstances of the gived bed at various places. Mr. ^fc>rgc L. Marsh went round with ^*ni to interview the various land owners mentioned, and assisted them i 11 attending to various other important matters. For a long time the Waccamaw River has been in need of this deeper channel. Time after time money in small amounts has been appropriated for the work. It is the intention of tfk Board of Trade of Conway to keep on knocking at it until the desired end has been attained and the tweive foot channel completed all of the way from the mouth of Bull Creek to Conway. It is one of the greatest movements ever made for upbuilding of Conway ahd the placing of Conway and Horry county contiguous thereto in the commercial position that we deserve. Already important work has been accomplished on the channel of the river as is quite apparent to any one who has travelled lately down this river on the steamers. This work was done un< er former contracts for straightej '.ng and deepening the river at diflicult points. * ~? x j wi - I ileitis rrom I'rince's Mill. Farmers busy setting tobacco.
