C THURSDAY, MARCH 5th. 1?14. There are mysteries in the world too hard to be explained. But why worry. ?O? By making it impossible for the criminal to escape, we will materially lessen crime. - O? I The farmers will do well not to plant too much of any one crop. It is easy to overstock the market and 1 bring prices down. ; ? O? I The fanners should more and , ino*e diversify iheir crops. In that way the market will neyer be over surplicd in any one thing. ?O? 'J ai k ifc one of the easiest things in the world. Ard ih<ie is talk of a k inds. The most hateful perhapsl i.s that which slanders another with o ut just cause. ?O? Take ud\antogeof fcvei jthing tha^ will advance your succss in the world, in your cho6<n profession or work That is the way to be the ino8t useful to your fellow man, and the most useful life is the happiest. Usefulness is the only roval road In hanpi J i tit ss, i _0~Many people fail to appreciate the , many things that the government at t ?r uomii^iuii ib uomg ior me masses { of the people to aid tbcni and help v ... a them along in their various callings. r And no matter how much the government may do for them, still they c hate to pay taxes. ? -o_ a The Conway Civic League evident- g ]y wants to increase its membership. a We were recently told that invitations d to seventy five non-members to join ii the league were sent out, and oat of *( the entire seventj-five, only three a attended the meeting. Fiom this ? fact we judge that there are some H ladies in Conwaj who are unmindful of the great amount of gool this t league not only can do, but is ac- ! tually doing. We trust they will } wake up at last and make the Conway ? Civic league break the record in j this State. I < ?O? The individual is making improvements on his place often commits the error of spending his money for temporary repairs because they are cheap er and take less time to apply. It would be better to pay more and take more time and have it fixed for all t me. In the very same way the , officers of government in spending ( the tax money, often placo itout in ; small amounts in making temporary improvements, instead of doing each thi' g in its turn as ..early perfect as possible and as lastiugand durable as fc/o.iriible. In building reads ihe rule ought to be that each portion of the road woik'd m shail ? e place*; in good condition to i< will last. ? O ? It is 8'ated in "\\ ebsters old "blu? back1' speher; that he who takes advantage of all of th* small frag ments of time during his nfe wilt accomplish much. There is noi u 1 I truer saying to be found, lake it on the farm, in the shop, and in the office, the little fragmtnts of time consisting of five or ten minutes, maybe hours, are continually lost from day to day. There is many a mau who will sit ldleforten, fifteen, or twenty minutes, waiting to take hold of some small job that is not quite ready to handle, instead of sating this wasted time at something else which he might eithei finish or start toward completion. In this way hours in the aggregate are lost and thrown away in the run of a week. POTATO DISTRICT Railroad to Open up Rich Trucking Section. Horry Connty is to have a new trucking district this season, and freight is to be hauled into and out of a rich seotion of South Carolina that has never in ail its history en- w joyed any kind of transporation fa- 8l cili ties. 3 About a week ago Representative Stanley of Horry called Commisioner Watton's attention to the fact that, in the extreme northeastern portion of Horry county the people were anxious to go into the planting of potatoes for the market. The Whiteville Lumber Company oi North Carolina, which has buiit a railroad line south from Whitsville, N. C., across the line some seven and a half miles into South Carolina c to a point near Ruth, the people 1 were sure they would-haul their pro j ducts. When the owners of the road, which is not chartered in ? North Carolina and South Carolina, were visited by the intending truckers, the owners consulted their aitorneysand then advisad the truckers that they could only haul, under special permission of the Noith Car- % ollna commission, to the South Carolina line. and could not hrincr ur?i? ?- - MU J freight oyer the line into South Care- , Una territory. This would have necessitate a tiyt mile haul by wagon over a miserable public road, and it lookod as if the case was l closed. i Mr. Watson took the view that nothing short of a special dispensation from the Uui.to Suites inter slate eo miner,l com mission ai Wusi.ington could nelp the people of hi terri ?> huVing o veiop* i.uut n Mr. O'Bcri y.[the piesident rl m Whueviile company, while anxious ^ ,o tncourage this development, e\e ; .0 advancing and furnishing seed jotatoes, was unwilling t; charter OJ he road in either State, as tne road vould then have to carry passong ' r.? tc md mail and would have to lay ncv ails in order to comply. r A conference with the State rail v AO/i A/\?rt " ? * ~ ^ uou buuiuiiBsiuu was neiu ana i/omuitsiooer Watson's r(quest that tne gt ommission give the same consent as o the road hauling freight in this p< >tate as had been given by the forth Carolina commission was ranted. ar Arming Mr.Sloanof the depait! lent of agriculture with tne proper ocuments, Mr. Watson dispatched w Ir, Sloan to Washington to invoke be aid of Senator Smith and to pre* th ant the unusual combination of cirumstances to the interstate com itrce commission.
