C.?Crime Alleged in This County on Dec. 18th, ?Children Visit Father From McCall, Where the Family Works in Cotton Factory. Oae day lasb week Manassa V. Gerald wai arrested at Mullins by Sheriff J. A. Lewis and lodged in jail here to await a preliminary hear ing before Magistrate W. H. Chestnut, before whom a warrant had been 8worn out by Gerald's wife charging a heinous offense against her husband. The warrant charges the crime as having been committed in this county about December 18th, 1912, near Adrian, S. C,, where the family were living at that time on a small farm owned by Gerald there. For several years prior to this the Gerald familv lived at McCill, S. C. and the entire family worked in the I ootton mill at that place. Family troubles of a serious nature arose batweon Gjrald and his wife and they septrated, the wife and children remaining for a while at McCall, and Gjrald gjing to Mullins whore he established a grocery store. Same of tha family including the wife moved down to the place near Adrian, and not long ago when Gerald ylsited the place a warrant charging assault and battery was sworn out against him, but nothing could be proved as it turned out and that cas3 was hastily dropped. On vj * last Th ursday the children of Geraid still living at McCall, visited ./ t him here in the j ill. By those who ^ ^ have looked into the matter it U regarded as an unfortunate family trouble, and there are not many who believe tberfe is anything in the serious charges brought again3t the defendant by bis won wife lrom whom ^ he has been separated. \ M - * ? On lasl Saturday evening, March 15th, during the storm of rain, a cyclone struck in Dog Bluff township and wrought death in its path, and destroyed and damaged much property. So far but one death has been reported, but there were many painful and serious injuries to the people living along the track it made. It seemed to start some where in the fork of Spring and Brunson Swamps and swept its way in the direction of Cool Spring, though its main fury had been spent when it reached the latter mentioned place. The home of Joe Tompkins was wrecked, and his boy was killed. As the blast struck the house the son ran out. The roof of the house was blown off and fell 011 him mashing him flat on the earth. Lonie Sawyer's house was blown down, Mr. Sawyer's son received a severe iniurv in the head and the doctor was called. John B, Dimery lost his home and all out houses, all trees and fences on his place, a total wreck. The wind even tore up a new buggy behad bought. A young mau named Lawson, who waa slopping at Sawyer's had his leg brolceu in two places. The barns and stables of Mrs. Shelly near Cool Spring were blown down. Mrs. Nancy SkippeV was pinned down in iho wreckage of her home by a rafter fallthg across her neck. She was injured severely. The wife of Ebb Brown and Mrs. Mishoe were both painfully and seriously injured. As many as twelve buildiugs were reported as blown down in the immediate vicinity. It is impossible to estimate the damage to property at this time, but it was stated by many to be very great. It will cost time and labor to clean up the debrip, A total of fifty fiye people were mide homeless. Aid is being s/licit A t for Items From Horcc Farmers are busy preparing for another crop, and are buying a lot of fertilizer judging from the qu mtity hauled away from this point. There has been no event of possibly more interest to every Wolt'ord A a ^ r*{ a I a n n am fi/\. olUU^Ot llittli tliu umGicfci auuuuuuc meat that one of our Faculty would be a candidate for Governor in 1914. ])r, ClinkscalG8 has been professor of Mathematics here for several years, and at all times bas shown himself yory deeply interested in the educational interests of the State. For a number of years he was a professor at Clemson College. There is perhaps no man in the State who is more thoroughly known as an enthusiast for education. Every year he is in various sections, making speeches, and persuading boys and girls to go to college. Nor is his work for any one college in particular, Each year *he sends as many students to Clemson, or Furman, or the University as be does to Wofford. It is this unselfish zeal for education that is highly commendable in him, and to this added tbe quality or mannooa tnat is oacx of it makes Dr. Cunkscales a desirable man for the position of chief executive of the state. His platform will be Compulsory Education, for which during those years of teaching he has been constantly striving. Finding that the critical moment has bean reached in this issue, he now proposes to opouly enter the fight lor the accomplish ment of that purpose. Nor will he fight without opposition, for there are those throughout the state who will persist in an attempt to crush a measure which will force intelligence upon the masses. We need not, however, argue pro or con on the subject at issue, for in due timo the necessity of it will be plain to all. Yet it is with keenest interest and pleasure that we feel able to present to the people of the state a man who will certainly strive to upbuild every good cause and just as certainly strive to crush every bad cause. The students at WofTord and Converse colleges aod of the Fitting School have organized clubs with the view of promoting his candidacy. J. E. F. Send us your Job Work, ft 0**JI CONWAY, S.
