' ii-"A news item appeared in last week's issue of the Herald related that a farmer in Bajboro township 5n *Ma r>oiint,X7 rniCPfl thifl YOaT Oil I LI VU 10 M v j ^ one acre, four hundred bushels of Eweet potatoes, This with other instances recently cited shows to anybody the possibilities of Horry soil, and the wonderful rooultt thai: may be had bj a syetcit of correct fertilisation and proper cultivation. What can be done in Bayboro township can be done with the lands in almost every other seer, ion of the county. Before the item of last week concerning the large potato from Bayboro, there were two items giving the weights of large sweet potatoes grown in other sections of this county, the soctiona in which they were grown being widely sepa rated. As th? Herald^stated some time ago, there is a marked improve merit in the methods used by the farmers in this county, and this ha* beea toming on for tha past stvera years. They raise more of almost all crops per acre than they did formerly. They knnw better how to raise aid hanndle the money crops. As a result of this they are in better financial conditions than ever before, they ride in better vehicles as a general rule, they live bettor at home, and last but cot least they are using every day in their farming operations, more and more of tho latest improved modern farming utensiU and machinery. Judging from the reports received here from the different sections of the county, the present year will go down in history da one marking the material advancement of the Horry farmor. Oonwaj should be interested as much at any Southern town in the movement for Atlantic Deeper Waterways, and should encourage in every way possible, the Atlantic Deeper Waterways Association, which was formed for the express purpose of furthering the deepening and widening of the inland waterways of the South, all of them of course leadiug down to the Atlantic Ocean, and connecting with commerce across the seas as well as com merce among the States co&bt-wise along the seaboard. As has been stated before the Wsccamaw River will be used as a part of the inland waterway which was planned several years ago extending from the New England States around to the Gulf of Mexico. When this gigantic pro ject shall be completed Conway will occupy one of the very b&t positions on the route. That it will make this town an important commercial center goes without saying. From & town of a few thousand inhabitants it will grow into ten thousand, per hap3 more. Where we do a small business estimated now in the thou sands, the business then in commercial linos will be counted in millions. Conway will bo able bo hare those things that it needs now so badly. We mention all this to show that the movement above mentionsd should have the encouragement of every citizen, for it is certain that efforts pit forth will benefit coming gonera tions at least, and there is a strong possibility that the goal will be realized even in the lives of those now living. The latest bulletin of the Atlantic Deeper Waterways Association has a very optimistic tone, and the president of the association shows that he is very much inooura Kg?d by the election of men in favor of this movement* TAX NOTICE The tax books will be open for : collection of taxes for tbe fiscal year L, 1912 from October lft&b., 1UI2 to March 15th, 1U13. payable without . penalty to December 31st.
