I The Attention of Chief Ambrose Culled ] 1 to the Actions of a Strange Woman Found Knocking Arouud the Plait , of the Conway Lumber Cempany. J ^ * * * ^ t y-L 4 v\AMaAne On last JMonaay di^ui ^oio^uo called the attention of Chief Am- j brose to a strange woman who was ( waiting about the sheds of the Con- , way Lumber Company, with no- j apparent purpose in view. It was , then about dark and a rainy night. i She was apparently about 35 years of ago and getting gray. Mr. Ambrose, the chief of police with some c?.hei*8 in the party went down to the plant of the lumber company and asked the woman her name and tried to find out what she wanted, j She stated that her name was Har- 1 riet Lowery and that she was walk- \ ing all the way from Washington, J D C., to Tampa, Fla., and that she nad arrived in town that evening on 1 a mail oart from Wampeo, and that she was knocking around the lum- i ber sheds in the hope of finding a barge going down the river with a i load of lumber. She was told that she could go down on the regular steamer, and she replied that she had no money with which to pay her passage, and wanted to go in some way that would not cost her anything. , Finally the chief told her that she would not bo allowed to stay around the works of the lumber company, and that unless she went on out of town, she would be looked up. She protested against this, but when th* oflicer insisted she agreed to take the road leading from Conway to Bucksvillo. As she disappeared down the road the policemen followed her to see if she went. Inx steaJ of keeping the road she turn* ed out a short distauca from the corporate limits and walking through the woods returned ioto the town went and sat down on the porch of a vacant house belonging to Mr. W. R. Lewis. The ollicers again wont to her and this time actually started to take her to jail. She protested vigorously against this and claimed they had no right to arrest her and that she was minding her own business and bothering nobody's property. She otlerod to show papers which would convince them, and when tney offered to look at the papers, she showed several government ap- I pointments to postal positions, and t a very good recommendation from a one of the departments. Ua her e promise not to give trouble she was t allowed to remain in the vacant 1 house, and she was not seen the following morning. She was not y very badly dressed and one of the i papers she had showed that she was trained in the science of book-keep,a*. ing. Whore sbo went, what her purposes are, and where she came from, are all mysteries, and are likely to remain so. j No 660 For Chills & Fever. It seems that there was a dispute between the parties over a drayage bill. They went into the store of Mr A. C. Thompson on Friday evening late to straighten out the matter.
