Girls' Tomato Club. The Canning Demonstration and exhibition of fr*sb tomatoes will tie held in the nmrt house in C on way Monday July 15, in eotiueotic n with this FiiiMiicr'a Institute conducted by the Clemsnti College Extension Workers. It is very important thai every member of the Gi la Tomato Clubs bo present. y The pr z t. ? be offered are not of u.h great value as those wo will | C IT -r in the (all, b ?C;m m quality of . one fruit is the only consideration | at this I into. i Next f>ll we will offer prizes for i the groaM'hb yield, greatest pp^tlt, best history of the crop, best book- | lei. on tomato recipes, best coinpo- < bitlon ou tomatoes, excellence in < canning tomatoes, cooking tomato < pickles, primer yes, etc.. and for various other things. Among the pri- { zes to be otTerbd at that time is a free trip to the NaMonal Corn Show in Columbia next January. However, the prizjs are all valu- i able ones and I hope that every mem ber will bring in an exhibit competing for one or all of them. In every case, 1 especially desire that you bring or send in your finest tomato and also the ten finest you have at that time. Gather your tomatoes carefully o.*?d arrange them as neatly and utIrauiively as possible. Do not fail to put your name, age and address ana name of school you attend upon ine package. I realize that many of the gardens 1 are late this sosson, and that probably some of the i^irls will not haye very many ripe tomatoes. If thai should be the ease with you, don't let it keep you from sending the ten ripe*t ones you have. I 1 think it would be well for the gins in each local club to meet to- ' gether and plan a club exhibit, ap- i pointing some one to take charge ( of exLibits sent in by thobe who can { not attend. If you find it impossible to send a * representative, send in your package to mo at Conway. On my trip to your gardens recently 1 found a great many girls who did not-have plants enough to set all of their one tenth of an acre. Some did not think they could use other seed than those sent out by *hoU S Department of Agriculture I regret that this misunderstanding* nub occurred. You may use any kind of seed. The following are re commended: Acme, Ponderosa, S'iono, Matchless, Beauty, Maule's Earlianna, and Aiammoih. However, if for any reason you failed to set all of your plants but have set and cultivated a fiw of j^hom, you will still have a right to e?.tcr jne contest and try for ail of the prizes offered at this first exhibit, quality of fruit will be the only consideration. Tne prizes to be offertd this Summer arc as follow*: Ages 9 to 14, Best single tomato ?1st prize, parasol, worth $1.15, 2nd prise, Pearl handlo knife, worth 75 ceuts. Ages 14 to 18, Best single tomato ? Ini prize, Pair of silk hose, worth 75 cents, 2nd prize, 50 cents cash. Ages 9 to 18, Best 10 tomatoes? 1st priz3, Canning outfit, $10.00, 2ud prize, $1 00, 3rd prize, bolid gold club emblem (pin.) For best exhibit from one club (local) as follows: 1st prise, $3.00 cash, 2nd prize, $2.00. The prizes won by local clubs must be used to improve the school or schools attendee oy the members of the local club. The most important feature of the day will be the Canning DernonHratiou. Mr E. L. Flowers, an ex pert canner, who is one of the manu lacturors of the Modern Home Canner, Hickory, N. C., will be h?re to give tbe demonstration. i u.. ... i,?/j hitvi t?t oAmm In m i imvu aaitcu uim >u ??? ? >v ... early, before all of the tomatoes ripen. He will can other vegetables, also. More detinue announcements wili be made later. 1 hope you will be able to attend at least one of these demonstra tions. There will be only exbioition of fresh tomatoes.
