There we boarded a train for Taveres. We reached there on Wednesday, the 20th, and found the weather hot and sultry. Well, at Tavcrse we got a conveyance to take us down to Astalula and on our journey we were compelled to seetf shelter from a thunder storm. On our arrival we were met by L W Jenkius, who took us to the hospitable home of Mrs H W trucks where we wore served with refreshments. On Thursday we took a stroll out in the orange groves looking at the different kinds of fruits. We saw and had the pleasure of eating the grape fruit, oranges, tangerines, gauvers, d vtes and other tropical fruits. I might say that Florida is one of the most progressive States in the Union I saw string beans grow ing. English peas, cabbage and .all vegetables and fruit, growing is the principal feature* of Florida. Cabbage sell for 2} cents the pound; English peas, $9 00 the drum; string Kanna 4:<i. 00 f/Mvi.i f/\nr< una i* rj, ?' * v" vi wuuj VUU4U tUCO, $2 50 per crate. We mipht say something of the soil of Florida, The hammock land is the most productive for trucking The sandy loam is principally used for fruit growing The turpentine industry is quite different from this country. The cups are attached to the pine in place of boxing. Florida seems to be a most curious but beautiful country, there being the most beautiful lakes for the pleasure seeker to go boat riding, fishing, surf bathing, etc. Again, we might speak of the climate of Florida. On reaching the State, originally known as the Land of Flowers, we pulled our coats and enjoyed the breezes of t^e Atlantic ocean and the great Gulf. After a two weeks stay in the sunny South, which was mod pleasantly spent, we returned to our mcther county, Horry. As the poet says: "There is BO place like home " Austin C Hucks. to - 4;.< V ' .
