II C Lundy, a Young Man Prominent |s in Fraternal Circles, After Being Twice Tried in the United States Court for Robbing the Mails, is Acquitted, the Jury Being Out Only a Short Time. "Henry C Lundy, assistant postmaster at Conway, S. C., pleaded not guilty in the United Slates District Court Tuesday to a charge of stealing money from a registered letter which passed through his hands. He is being prosecuted by [the postoHioe department through its inspectors. District Attorney j Cochran is handling the case for the i prosecution, and Messrs Scarbor-j ough & Wait are the attorneys for ! the defence. "The indictment returned against; Lundy charges that he stole three live dollar bills from a registered letter sent through the Conway o'-; lice. The bills were placed in a de-? coy letter by inspectors and marked, and it is alleged that when the j (letter reached its destination the bills were missing. They had been l handed in a letter to a postal clerk on the train just before tne latter, 'handed the mail to the Conway post-' jclTice authorities, | "In the case yesterday United; States Inspector 11 P Holiday, I SI Lemon and G M Brown testified for the prosecution. They showed how! the had used decoy letters on the,' Conway c-Hice, after learning, as. they alleged, that several times registered mail passing through the Conway ollice had been tampered with "The inspectors in their testimony gave an insight into the methods used by the postollico department to apprehend dishonest employees. When a certain ollice is suspected, the inspectors place marked bills in registered letters and send them through the suspected ollice in such a manner that the otliciais of the olfico shall be the only ones.handling iho letters on their way to their destination. They stated that many circumstances went to prove ihatLuudy was guilty ( of taking the money. ^ 4tL G Camion, a railway mail 1 b Si r lino is also complete in all n and domestic lines. ^hoos, K Dress Goods, Ladios Wear- E8 parol and Gents Furnishings.
