Deadly Typhoid Fever Not an Uni>nmmnn ltPKlllt. Fro in Water-Supply Paper United gtatea (ieolo^ical Survey. Almost any community in which wells have been drilled can boast of a number of combination dug and drilled wells. The owners congratulate themselves on their wisdom in utilizing an old dug well lifteen, twenty or thirty feet in depth, and drilling through the bottom of this to a good flow of.d*ep water. The cost of drilling that twenty or thirty feet has oeen saved, certainly an economy worth considering. A? a matter of fact this combined dug and drilled weil is a-particularly dangerous type. It may readily breed malarial fever or typhoid fever, which is more prevalent in the country than even in the overcrowded cities, in spite of the supposed pure water supply of nearly all farming sections, buch a well is all the more dangerous because it is fancied to be safe. Although the water en countered by the deep well is perfectly pure at the start, contamination may take place almost immediately by the entrance, especially after rains, of steepage water into the open well and men into the casing of the drilled well. The remedies are obvious. , Either the casing should be carried to the surface of the outside ground, or at least above the highest level ever reached bv the water, or the open well should be converted into a water tight system by applying a thick coating of cement over both sides and bottom. Is the World Growing Better? Many things go to prove that it is The way thousands are trying to help others is proof. Among them is Mrs. W. W. Gould, of Pitufield, N. II. New York, October 10 ?What is supposed to be the first modern hoopskirt in captivity in this country was put on exhibition a few dayago in a New York department store and was viewed by a large throng, in which were many men. Unlike its predecessor, the modern hoopskiru creation does not flue - " ' t ! .? Then there are "cerclette" skirts, (made exactly like lamp shades, even to the edging of beaded fringe), beerinolined aud be flounced like the ancient hoopskirts, only on a smaller scale, for evenings, and there are daytime gowns which show not only hips, bub waists so small that they make plump passersby smile wryly and declare modern styles "hideous-" but which make the corset makers smile with a confident dream of many orders. There are, too, quaint basques, pointed in hack and front, which will make the wearer look exactly like a fashion elate fifty odd years ago, but P&quin declares them the "de rnier cri," and the world of women must agree. It is planned to start at least a few brass bands over the country this winter. Several towns and hamlets are alreadv selecting the men for the various instruments. J W Pepper & S >n, Box 1322.
