It was a narrow escape from the power and dominion of rum, but an escape all the same, * * Your Uncles Ben Tillman and Jasper Talbert are contending for the same persimmon and will enter the arena next summer for United States Senator. Well, the fellow who has the longest pole will knock down the persimmon. By the announcement of his can didacy for Governor, Judge Jones knocked out Attorney General Lyon in the first round, in whose bonnet the gubernatorial oee was buzzing This recalls to mind 4'that the mills of the gods grind slow, but they grind exceedingly fine." ? ^ ^ Governor Blease has succeeded in securing the next meeting of the annual national convention of Red Men for Charleston, this State. This was very good work for the Governor, and much appreciated by Charleston in particular and the Red Men in general. But then as one swallow dees not make a summer, so one good act does not make Blease fit to be Governor of South Carolina, - Chief Justice Ira B Jones, of the ' State Supreme Court, has resigned for the avowed purpose of entering the gubernatorial race next summer against Governor Blease. The candidacy of Judge Jones has every where met with an enthusiastic reception and great confidence is ex pressed in his ability to redeem South Carolina from the rule of the politician and recover its escutcheon from the slime and filth of dirty political jugglery and trickery, People who own lots at the cemetery should chip in and have it cleaned up. It is said that it is almost impossible to get to the graves on account of the weeds, grass and sand spurs. A contribution of only 1.5 cents per month from each lot owner would raise a fund sufficient to employ a good landscape gardner who would keep the lots and drives free these noxious gro wths and beautify that hallowed place. It will certainly make us all feel better bv so doing. The Farmers's Union has fixed the price of cotton at 15 cents anc urges all farmers not to sell for less. Toe buyers, however, are only paying somewhere in the neighborhood ot 13 cents for the ileecy staple aid are buying it right along. The roa?. 'son for ibis deploi able condition is * 'obvious. Too many fanners an bound aid shackhd with liens ai-d mortg gus for supplies and art forced ?.o sell to nmot these cbl'gi gat ions and the t.nly way t'iey hav is to sell coiten at a price near tin cos.t u* proaucuon, j?o near, indeed that when the bills are p'iid there i "nothing left for Kitty and the Baby' It. doubtless is true cot tor will go U 15 ceuts before the season is over, but it will be when the crop is ou of the bands of the producers ano passes into those of the speculatoi and not a day sooner. This condition will obtain as long as the farm ers persists in depending upon the West for their supplies and the cot ton crop to pay for them. / Teachers' Examination.
