PUBLISHED EVERY THURSDAY MORNINO f BY CON WAV PUBLiSlIINO CO. 8UP*ORIPTJON ONE DOLLAR PER YEAR II, tl? WOODWARD. Editor THURSDAY. JULY 27, 1911 Congress is tinkering with the tariff. Does this mean another mil" lion or so issue of gold bearing bonds in time of peace? On a question of saloons or no saloons the people of Alabama in an election reversed themselves and overwhelmingly went from "dry" to "wet." Somehow or another we believe that if the $100,000 good roads prop osition was submitted to the yoter:< agaiu it would carry by a safe majority because our people understated the scheme better now than they did before. The hookworm hospital which was recently set up in Whiteville, is well patronized by a delusive and gullible public. As Fuck would remark "What fools ye mortals be." Start a fad aud there will be plenty to follow just to be in the fashion. We have a poor opinion of the farmer who grows all cotton and has his smokehouse and corn crib in the West. It is no wonder thatsuch a non progressive system of farming causes hard times to continually knock at the door of such a farmer and bankruptcy follow in its wake. It would be very interesting reading to compare the returns of both real and personal property in Horry with their selling value. The rusult would cause the Comptroller General and the State Board of Equalization to put on their thinking cap The d fTerence is all of out of proportion, 4'PLAYING TO THE GALLERIES " The political situation in this State just at this time is unique in many respects and the principle actors in the game, pleasantly unpleasantly, just as you are impressed with the van-colored and shifting scenes, is like jumping jacks in a clime musuem. Blease is playing to the galleries with a view of making votes and his political enemies know it, but are falling over each other in their made effort to be the first to get into Blease's drag net and thus help him to win votes that he would not otherwise have won. With those who are opposed to GovT* 1 1 11.1 r>. ernor mease aua an mat lileasisn: stands for, is "anybody to beat Blease," regardless of men and measures. This is their only aim and purpose in the approaching political campaign and no one understands the situation better than does Governor Bit use and as a consequence of this knowledge he is playing his cards with consumate skill and remarkable ingenuity Even his bitterest enemies admit this and by the despairing and hopeless cry, "anybody to beat Blease," admit tho truth of this proposition and are so rattled that thoy really don't know where they are at, arid worse?than that are so confused and oonfounded that they know not which way to turn. There is a deplorable lack of organization in the crusade against the Governor and <:.. ~a --1 uu wcu uciHitu piun to encompass his defeat which offers a reasonable ground of hope for succor from the grievous and humiliating evils which adlict us as a grand and proud old commonwealth and as loyal ard devoted sons of this commonwealth whose honor and integrity is as dear a nd as sacred to us as those of our wifo and our daughters, our mother and our sisters. On the other hand the creature who now occupies the gubsrnatorial chair has his forces in hand well disciplined and fully organized, but like Napoleon at Waterloo, his plans has a a weak place and the exergoncies of the times demands a Wellington to discover that fatally weak point and concentrate his attack upon it. Will it be McCloud, of Bishopville or Manning, of Sumter, or Smith, of Kershaw, or some dark horse whose friends has in grooming to deliver South Carolina from the - - r ' ;vr. v-. I hands of the politloa1! gamester and from the rule of incompetency and of disruption and. of decay? . 4*m<m ON TO SOUTHPORT. After a long delay and many disappointments, our Southport friends have seeu their fondest hopes realized and their dream of years come to pass. After years of struggle against fearful odds and overcoming seemingly unsurmountable obstacle* which would have discouraged less stouter hearts and tried the patience of less determined wills the people of that heretofore bottled up seaport town, but having a splendii harbor, have teen the last spik? driven in a railroad which promises a great aeai lor tne toe growtn ano development of tbat place as a port of entry. We sincerely and heartily congratulate Southport and its people on this glorious victory foi commercial supremacy over ihos? who for self aggrandizement have so loDg kept the seaport of Wilmington in the background am crippled its energies and smolherec its ambitions. We are informed by the pres.1 dispatches that last week the Wilmington, Brunswick & Southpori Railroad had been completed t' Southport and that freight and pat senger service will be established a an early date and already every thing in Southport is on a boom This is tbp road for Conway anc Horry people to tie to. We don' want to go to Georgetown for a set outlet because in the past it ha* been the bitter experience of Conway people that Georgetown ha.1 been the great octopus which hafc been sucking the life's blood of Horry and giving nothing in return. They have scooped in the government appropriations for rivers anc harbors to the material injury of the inland towns contigious to th? San tee, the Pee Dee and the Wacn.amjiw rivprs n.nd aft.fir hAinir filled with plenty of a blinded government she still cries for more pap Therefore, our hope and salvatior is to form new alignments with nev conditions. The Gardner & Lacy Lumber Co., has already commenced a road reaching toward Southpor and we are informed that it has already been completed as far in that direction as Wampee, about five oi six miles this side of Little River. JVom there 011 it will De an eas> matter to rsise funds sufficient ir the way of rights of way and other material assistance to carry the good work to its objective terminu* as the people in that section are just dead set on having a railroad through this territory. On thi.side we have the Conway, Coast & Western railroad with connection at Conway via Chadbourn and Elrod, direct with the coal fields of the. Alleganies and other mountainous sections of the south and west. This beincr the nearest and most direct route to a seaport outlet, it is hut reasonable to presume that the volume of business will pass til's way. The terminus of this r- id is at present at Aynor, about fifteen miles from Conway toward Marion, and it is again a reasonable presunption that this road will then be extended either to Marion court house or to Cades because the increase of business will peradventure demand its extension. In the meantime, however, on to Southport should be the watch word. Notice of Discharge. I will apply to the Judge of Probate, at his office Conwav, S C., on the 7th day of August, 1911, for a final discharge as guardian of Kizzie O Todd, Mary B Todd and Essie B Todd. Nancy J Todd. 5wl0. One with a struj for the wrist relieves the ache wonderfully. The Hum of the Hive. Economy In the .use of foundation Is wasteful, and it is a poor practice to put first strips or slatters of foundation in the section boxes, for it is an Indisputable fact that a full sheet of foundation In each section box means not only their ready acceptance by the bees, but also the building of straight er combs. By selection and restriction in the matter of queens we can improve our bees just as we can other stock, and there is always present in every apiary some choice queen far ahead of the others which will give us most excellent queens for requeening. Don't keep bees unless you mean to give them the proper care and attention. If you can't do that you had better leave some one else keep tb? bees and buy your honey from him. A man who knows "all about bees" and does not believe that anything more can be gained by reading bee Journals, books on bees, etc., will soon be far behind the age. The present Improved system of management requires that hives should not stand too near egch other. There should be at least six feet between them, and ten feet would be a prefer able distance. Be sure that your bees have a good, prolific Italian queen and the ants will bot bother them. i M Tj Gilmore has moved to Con way from the Daisy section, anc 1 lccepted a position here, GoodNewsl fl "I write to tell you the I good news that Cardui H m has helped me so much H and I think it is just H I worth Its weight in gold," H writes Mrs. Maryan Mar- H shall, of Woodstock, Ga.
