B Thus writes the manager of one of B the largest grain shipping houses in B the Stat9 of Kansas to CommissionB or Watson, in a letter in regard as to the requirements as to the quan tity of corn shipped into the State. H Home Crop Sufficient. H Commissioner Watson is of the opinion that the South Carolina crop I this year is very nearly going to B meet the demands-of the people of the State, aLd that it will not be necessary to purchase corn from the I corn belt any longer. In fact, he H says ho feels sure that unless I some unforeseen disaster occurs, the conditions in the West will not I worry the people in this State, but possibly will make the South Caro lma grower a seller of corn and at aifrap.tive nriees at that. Attracting Attention. Speaking of corn all over the country, the South Carolina requirements of purity and tho methods of testing damaged corn have been attracting attention. Tho State Department of Agriculture has had a lively six months of it starting the enforcement of the law and keeping ? the bad stuff out, and there has plenty of hard work about it. Since Commissioner Watson and Chief Chemist Summers wore with the grain m2u at JTashvi 11?, however, there has been a much better understanding of the new system of examination, and many of the d:tliculties have been disappearing. The National Grain Dealers Journal of Chicago has recently published all of the ilDeteriortion" bulletin, further clarif/ing tho atmosphere. Now the largest and most reputable shipp rs of grain are beginning to see the value of the steps taken in Souih Carolina aud it would not be surprising to see the same method of lest and examination put into practice in other States. Already inquiries have b on made from New York State along this line. Private Tests. In some instances mills grinding grits, hominy and meal, which have to use the whole grain corn, have ahvady begun toexamine the corn Ibe.y rejeive for this purpose in their own laboratories, according to the South Carolina method, ai d have so notified Commissioner Watson. Testing Corn Meal. The department of agriculture has at last gotten to the stage with this impure corn work that it has begun the examination of the quality of the corn meal being shipped into South Carolina, to sec to what extent the simll' is made of damaged corn, Inspectors are now drawing samples in all parts of the State and the laboratories are at work upon these samples.
