A RACE TO PROTECT HONOR A Young Daughter of a Tenent of Mi J. A. McDermott on His Place Near ? Conway, Has a Thrilling Experience While on Her Way From a Field to Her Home by Being Chased by a Negro Man Who is Now iu Jail. On last Saturday some excitement was caused, when the facts became known, upon the complaint of a young lady, the relati/e of a tenant living on the fdrm of J. A. McDer mott, near Conway, to the effect that she had been chased for quite a distance by a negro man named Buddie Jones. The place where it all occurred is a thickly settled neighborhood hetweea Conway and Homewood. The lady had gone into a distant field to fe?jd a goose that had a nest there. As she was ret urning and started to cross the public road for the purpose of walking down to a gate leading into her home some distance across another field, she saw this negro standing in some bushes near a wire fence about oue hundred and forty yards from her. She states that ho said something at her and she ran, and that he also ran after her and f (lowed her until she called to her u. . .ier or some one at the house, when he turned and went back the way he came. She ran clown the public road to the above mentioned gate, then through this gate along a loot path. The foot path led across a canal in a branch Tuere was uo bridge across the canal and in trying to cross she fell in. She got out on the side of the canal toward her father's house, and called to her mother. She stated that the man ehased her as far as down to the canal, but he did not cross it. Mr Tom Johnson was much worked up about the matter. It was reported to the sheriff and he lodged Jones in j nl on Saturday night tc await the action of the courts. Tbt -.an is a sob of Joe Jones, who is given a good reputatiou by s number of white men for whom h< has teen working. The sherif traced the mau to another neighbor hood, but failed to find him. He re quired those in the neighborhood t< apprehend him when he should b< found and arrest him. Some time after the sheriff had arrived back a his home in Conway, Bud Jones wai brought to his house and he gav< himself up it is claimed. From the Old Plantation.
