Although clad in a stylish coat suit, and wearing a modish hat with a large plume, there was lacking the evidence of "the feminine hand." In the Whilcvi le News-Reporter appears the following description of Mrs Hayes, written by the editor, who called at the jail last Monda> evening: "We waited some time in the sitting room of the jail before Mrs Hayes finished her supper and app ared Tnere entered the door a young woman, prodded by jiiloi Spivey, and others, who would nave attracted attention ; oy assembly No iady going into her parlor to roc ive a guest would have been more composed or dignified than tnis young woman, wnose delicate whiie hands had lined nine steelclad bullets into a man 's body with out m ssing a shot. We closely investigated the features and movements of Mrs Hayes, ard there was only calmness and repose. Not a motion or nook betokened remorse, fear or nervousness She was as calm and serene as a spring mornit g, and you saw refinement written 0.1 her face. "She was not only neat but exceedingly neat. She was tastily and Stylishly dressed and every garment fitted her as a glove and showed rare taste, each color blending and corresponding. "After an introduction, which she ackuowleoged with a slight bend of her head, Mrs Hayes seated herself without uttering a word. She is a blonde and rather frail, weighing about 120 pounds While possessing dignity and style she is not by ** ?? ?v\ ..r. m n f A 1\ AO n III Ur\M 1 * U.? ! "When we saw this young woman we knew at once it was a waste of words to try and interview her unless she desired to speak. And Mrs Hayes was absolutely dumb to the must trivial questions, as place of her birih and tne age and sex of their baby. She showed no otfence in tier refusal, but simply would not open her mouth save to bid our party good evening in a lady-like manner win n we took our departure. "We asked Jailer Spivey if he intended to lock Mrs Hayes up in a cell at night? He said he certainly would, although the duty was an unpleasant one. Mr Spivey said the father of Mrs Hayes was a good man and a cousin of bis, that his name was not Harrelson, but Harrell." Mrs. Hayes' Story. Mrs Hayes'testimony at the coroner's inquest was not admitted at the hearing Tuesday: partot it, however, was given in The News and Courier dispatch from Con way the day following A somewhat a fuller report of her statements is given in the following article from the Whiteville News-Lioporter. It is as follows: "Mrs U. D Hayes, wife of Neill Hayes, and the woman who did the shooting, was theonlyother witness Leurd. She testified as follows: ,4R. Mrs Hayes continues reticent and declines to talk. A number of people call to see her, most y prompted by curi sity, but Sheriff Richardson ^ave instructions to permit no one to see her unless with the woman's onsent. Mrs Hayes desires to keep private as much as possible, and do(s not wish to be subjected to the prying eyes of strangers. I "See I !
