Tho Herald has for the past four or live years been ur^iu^ the im- t portance of good public roads aud i it is a matter of ?jt"uat satisfaction < to the Herald t) notice that some of i the seed at least sow a by it has < \ i i t-wl l/\/l (?ivinkA f i < ?/\/\/] <?<v i I n i\/l V\ n o I IUUUVI ivni^ua u i in t;uuu aiMiuun uao I sprung up unci is bearing good fruit. | It is a pleasure aUo to note that others have joined the gojd roads movement are giving of their time and talent and iullunnce a liberal share toward the. accomplishment of y so worthy an undertaking and it is ( reasonable to presume that the r.'ads of Horry will be so improved as to compare favorably with those ' of any other county in the State Good roads is a vital essential to the growth and devolopment of Horry for without them no permanent results along those lines can bo ex- ( p.'ct to follow any etVort put forth toward the betterment of our eon- , dition, and is a source of oongratu- ( lation t<? those who have longrocog- ( ni/.ed the importance and appreci- y alod the value of good roads as a , promoter of good morals and a | potent agent, in the development of the country where they are located, to know ibatsujh a wholesome and healthy public sentiment is being aroused favorable to the demand for better public roads, especially the ' increased interest being taken in the matter by the country folk. Many of them have experienced to 1 their discomfort and injury the evil e fleets of bad roads and are very dcsirious for a radical change so as to reach their market town without so much aggrivation an J the least expenditure of patienca and the wear and tear on animal and vehic'e and in the shortest possible time. In the days when time wasn't money it mattered not so much if a day was lost from work in going to mill, if the vehicle broke down and the animal gave out in going to church for the lost day cou'.d be made up and there was preaching the live long day, but in these days of strenuous business activity and every nerve is strained to its uttermost tension in the mad rush to accumulate the Almighty Dollar a day lost is {40110 forever and preaching lasts a couple of hours at the longest, to be "stuck in the mud" is a thing too serious for contemplation. Then, again, this restlessness is observed in Conway. The remark that good roads have become absolutely necessary for the growth and life of Conway is beard from nearly every month. All classes aro joining in the refain making a harmonious whole. Illustrative of the fact that the people of Conway are fully alive to the situation and are determined to do their part in the work of im' proving the roads, we mention that many of them have gone down into their own pockets and subscribed liberally toward the fund for road improvement. This article would be incomplete should we fail to call the attention of the public to the excellent road work now being done by Supervisor Murrell around Conway. For several miles out he has thoughly worked and cluytd the roads in such a manner that with a little working now and then they will stand the or, diuarv wear and tear for years. Mr Murrell and his Board of Commissioners? W J Hendricks and N E Hardwick?are doing a groat work for Horry and one that liorry will appreciate as the work progresses. Of course thero is some complaint about the condition of the roads in some localities, but they propose to reach every section of the county as fast as the condition of the roads ana tne class or worn inoy are aoing will permit. We believe this, anyhow. The Woman's Missionary Society of the Kingston Presbyterian church are arranging to bring off a Bazar, in the vacant store in the Quattlebaum Block, next Friday, December 10th, at which many useful fancy articles suitable for Christmas presents for men, women and children will be sold. This promises to bo one of the most successful and enjoyable events of the season and doubtless will be well patronized by the community. The proceeds of the Bazar will be applied to thodebt on the manse and quite a nice sum should be realized for this purpose. The long continued drought is alarming. We have not had but one real hard rain since summer, though there have been several showers, none of which were sufficient to give the around a arood decent wetting. the consequence being that many of the creeks, branches and swamps, h as well the wolls, in different sections of the county have failed, and stock and game are suffering for water. The merchants are looking forward to a big Christmas trade and the little ones are on their good behavior for fear that old Kris Kringlo will not call to see them in the time of Good Cheer. When cold weather really sets in ;he people of florry will enjoy a hog filling time, E \ Wait, of Conway, was registered at the Orton House in Wilmington last Thursday. Many new names were added to die Herald's list of subscribers from ilT the R F D's recently established. According to tho advertisements tow appearing in the press Sauti Ulaus will make his tour of the world ihis year in an air ship instead of ,he raindeers and sled. There is lothing like keeping up with the progress of the times. The FRANKLIN The Most Perfect SelfFilling Fountain Pen Made NO openings in the barrel?all parts are ink-tight. No rubber sacks to break or get out of order?the life of a rubber sack in contact with the acid in ink is very short and uncertain. Easy to fill.?Simply insert the nozzle or pen end in the ink and draw the plunger out once and the trick is done, screw parts together, and go ahead and write. Pen is never out of commission even if the filling device failed to work, as the nozzle can be unscrewed and the pen filled just like an ordinary old style fountain pen. This is a feature contained in no other self-filling pen on the market. The self-filling device may be entirely discarded and the pen will work perfectly.
