I oncertei notion ? 1 > g tics lino v.ould in i short lime make our slnets ojua iu bounty aid convenience to tlr.il of any town of our s zo, Do the lmrch.uitsof Conway know that they have a territory of about forty miles in each direction from whioh to draw trade? Within this territory are se ine of the most fertile lauds in this country adapted t the growth of food plants as well as to cotton. Ti ue just now it is i ot as well developed and opened to cultivation as it should be, yet it. N becomii if inorc and more so each day Our people are paying more attention to the fanning interest tlnn they have ever done. Now the best and the hitcst improved implements are being introduced and more time is given to the study of the science of agriculture. These things are obvious to the most indifferent observer. The merchants of Conway however do not seem to realize the mine of wealth in the way of trade contained within this territory: 01 rather they apparently make but. little or no effort to turn the volume of that trade in the direction of Conway. They will all tell you tint they want that trade, that it is very desirable, and thus far will they go i ? (...ii ** u,uu mniu Luur. \\ nor. it comes to going down in their pockets to furnish the wherewithal! to help in ihe work of bringing trade aud settlers this way, hut ft w, very few will be found ready to respond to the demands of the modern way of building up a town, the mi>] n'ity seem contented, to set d iwn waiting for something to turn up, in the hope of reaping a portion of the prosperity following theeflortsof their more euterpris ing and energetic neighbors. When the Hoard of Trade was organized a year or so ago nearly all o! business men and many citizens met and all agreed touching the importance of such an organization in the deve lop mcnt and the beltennent of existing conditions. But when the ways and means to accomplish these ct sired results were discussed a very wet blanket was thrown on the enthusiasm and it was extinguished, and whet: the membership fee war. fixed at *5 and ?10 per annum the stampede began, leaving about a corporal's guard to shou dor the responsibility and foot the bills. Such conditions in relation to business atlairs should not exist. When we talk of the upbuilding of Conway, we must take into consideration that it talmoin oney to make money, and the greater tlie outlay directed in tlx right channel the greater the returns. As wi1 view the present situation the one thing needful to bring ab iut our charished hopes, and see Conway on the high road to prosperity is for our people to come together as one roan and d > 1 here full share of dut.\ and bear their ]orticn of the business so that ail can enjoy the full bent tits which will surely follow united and persistant efforts* Ihet us do this and we will see Conway prosper as she has never prospered before and all her institutions flourish as they have never flourished before, < Floy cJ 5.
