r Horry. ] Is it any wonder, under the circumstances just described that these people became greatly enthused, that the smoldering embers of hope blazed up with renewed energy, that they hailed with joy the light that came from Mt. III V I I I o i% I I V4 VICUM II tw more prosperous times and happier days. ORICIIIN OP THE RAILROAD. On the sunny side of the eightie the Messrs Ohadbourn, of VVilmings ton, N 0., were operating a largesaw mill plant in that city-and also one at ( hadhourn, N c., then only a small station on the Wilmington, Columbia and Augusta Railroad, about thirty-nine miles from Conway. This firm, as I understand, was composed of Messrs J II., Sr., George, VV 11. and .J II., Jr. It owned or controlled large bodies of yellow pine timber lying between chad bourn and Mt Tabor, a distance of about twenty miles and only a few miles from the State line. To get this timber to their mills these gentlemen had built, equipped with all necessary rolling.stock and had in operation at tin ir own expense a logging railroad between theso two points and for several years after it was operated entirely as such. I belh veil transported neither passengers nor freight except persons and for persons employed by the mills; It was strictly a private undertaking for the development of a private business. At the time this road mus built and a long time after it was in operation L have no idea that the chadbourns had any intention of extending 1 he road to conway. It is doubtful if they even gave the matter a passing thought. I know not who ilrst comeived the idea of the road t'-ming to conway. Whether the chad bourns, seeing the deplorable conditions tlien existing in Horry and recognizing the great possibilities of development which nothing but a lailro-.d could possibly bring about, first, suggested the idea ami suggested it to the people of Ilorry, or iho people of Horry first, made the proportion to the chadbourns but from information and belief I am strongly of the opinion that it was the latter who made the propo> sition 10 the former. But be this as as it may, it is certain the idea was originated, plans laid and an understanding had between the parties. The agreement in a nut shell being that the townships of Green Sea, Si npson creek, Buyboro and couwav Were to be bonded the constitutional limit of 8 per cent., and for every dollar that these townships surscribtd the Chadbourns were to cover it with ianother dollar. This was the sum and substance of the agreement, and this was the beginning of a movement that was t hrough the providence of God destined to completely revolutionize condition? revive the languishing energies of the people and make Horry the most progressive ciuinty in the State. It was a )oar or more after the people of the other townships became enthused over the subject that the neWS of the nronosed pvtpnsirm nf the railroad reached Conway so slow did it lake important news to travel in those days. True now and then faint whispers fell from trembling lips but there was nothing definate a nil little or no attention was given the matter. In fact no credence whatever was given it for the reason that it was Mich a great innovation upon the established order of t itigs that it was beyond the comprehension of the average citizen to grasp its significance and meaning, and not till later on when Mr James II Chadbourn, Jr., began to pay occasional visits to Conway, and later on when be was joined in these visits by Mr \V II Chad'uourn did the people begin to give the matter any serious consideration. All along tlie line came the cheering news that tlie people wore becoming thoroughly aroused to the true meaning of the innovation and were doing all in their power to encourage the Messrs Chad bourn in their efforts to relieve the desperate situation in which they were bound as N so many slaves at work in the treadmill doing the 1 iddmg of the taskmasters to eke out a bare Bubsistance for theniselvts und their loved onc3. Be it said to the credit of these he oes, for when everything is con sidered? their tinancial ability toft ther with the treinmdous p-essure which was brought to bear to delay the day of their solvation or defeat their hoprs and aspirations altogether??hey stand out as grand $norul In; oes worthy in every way to wear the immortelle which adorns the biow of the victor.
