H. IN SESSIONS TRIED.
1 rlctl In Town Court on a Clianirc
of Vagrancy.
The town authorities have lorn
quite active recently in the prosecuting
of vagrants in the town,
Cast week Charley Bruton was
before the Mayor under a charge of
vagrancy. This was his second
trial, the jury failing to agree in
the first. In the second trial he
was found guilty by the jury and '
sentenced to pay a line of $25.00 or
lifteen days on the pablic works
with the option to get a job within
four days.
On Last Monday a similar charge
'came for trial against H N Sessions 1
The defendant demanded a jury and
Messrs B T By man, M VV Collins,
j A Lewis, J L Dozier, FS Powell 1
and y C Todd wero impaneled to try 1
the case. At the trial the to wn Intruduced
testimony showing that I
his tax returns was $50 00 though 1
it was not a year for returning
real estate, other witnesses testified <
that thov had seen him about town, <
but they could not say whether he <
had any means of living or not. but '
that he did net have any regular '
position- Tho defendant introduced j
testimony wuieh showed that he i
went out of the Judge of probate's I
office abon' three years ago, and
that afte1, that time ho obtained a <
position i i Florida and tilled the <
po.-ition for 8 or 51 months, return- <
iug here with his wife to attend her I
father the late liev W S McCaskili in (
his last illness. For that reason he 1
returned to South Carolina and reasonably
expected to obtain the 1
position of jailor under Sheriff Ses- *
sions whenever he should be re- <
elected. The proof showed that in
the mean time he has been acting in l
the position of constable to various (
magistrate doing any work which i
they required of him, working at 1
times under u J Sessions as sheriff, '
and collecting for business men. 1
He also proved that during that time 1
he has made honest efforts to obtain 1
a position, once with the Sir.ger 1
Sewing Machine Company, once in (
a beef market, on another occasion f
that he tried to get the position of ^
marshal for a town in this State. *
rue proof shpwed further that he t
has other suflicient money to sup- t
port himself with good board and 1
good clothes during the past three f
or four months at least, and that at I
the present time he holds a position with
J C Bruton doiug whatever t
work Mr Bruton desiros for the LJ 1
S Courts at the agreed wage? of
$15.00 per month and bis board. <
It also appeared that he was still 1
trying to get a job in Florida where s
his brother is doing well, and ex- f
pects to go to that place S.-pt 1st. i
at the close of his testimony Mavor
H P Little directed the jury to reu- J
der a virdict of "not guilty" which 1
they done. Those who heard the (
trial said that he made a very good c
showing. i

die striking feature of the state
