V A JOINT DEBATE PROPOSED.
Forecast Wants Horry to Have
RSAiiother Member of the House
of Representatives-- Coining: Social
Events.
Mr and Mrs S F casque, of Conway,
paid us a pleasant visit Sunday
Mrs C E Haselden and daughters,
Albertine and Mary Edna, of Latta,
S C, aro spending the holidays here
with the parents of the formor, Mr
and Mrs U A Dusenbury,
The Toddville Eiterarv society is
u J
. f growing quite interesting. Messrs
4* Harry Uhuark. Prank ureen, Pearly
oasque, Doc Singleton and Donnie
Dusenbury aro talking of challenging
the Conway society for a joint
debate.
Miss Maude Long, of oreenwood,
spent last week here visiting relatives
and friends.
A M Dusenbury is soiling stacks
of shoes and Xmas goods, and judging
from appearances it seems that
old Santa is making his hoadquarters
at Toddvilie:
Miss Costa Long, one of our most
charming young ladies, who is attending
Coker college at Hartsville,
is expected to arrive in a few days
to spend Xmas at home.
What shall we do with cotton?
Notwithstanding the Association
and the farmers's Uuion says hold
the price is still goiug down. Supply
and demand is bound to be a
controlling factor the market
We should raise more corn and oats.
Our popular teacher, Miss Lucile
Jay, leaves Thursday for her home
in Bradley, oreenvvood county. Wo
wish her a pleasant visit and a safe
return. Miss Jay has many attractive
olTers for another year, not only
in South Carolina, but friends in
oeorgia are also soliciting her to go
there.
It seems that Hon M M Stanley
does not propose to sit on the stool
of do nothing. We respectfully call
his attention to the fact that at the
last primary election Horry county
cast over 1,000 more votes than
Florence, still Florence has three
Representatives while Horry has
only two. Please give this matter
your attention, Mr Stanley, and thus
make room for another Horry boy*
There will bo an entertainment at
Union church Xmas Uve night, to
which the public is cordially invited,
rhe exercises will be under the
management of Misses Jessie Dusenburv,
Mamie and Dessie Jordan and
will consist of songs, recitations

entertainment and a largo crowd ii
expected. The exercises promise!
to be very amusing. Forecast.

ENTERED INTO REST. '
After a L.oiijt and Well Spent l.lfe
Rev L. S. Booth Dies.
At his home near here, on Monday,
December 7th. 1908, Rev L. S. Booth
a Baptist minister, fell asleep in the
02nd year of bis age, aud was laid to
rest the following day in the cemetery
at Poplar church, in the presence
of a large concourse of sorrowing
relatives and frieuds. The services
were conducted by Rev D.
D. Anderson, assisted by Rev J. C.
Davis of the Methodist church.
It can truthfully bo said that
a good man has falleu and his loss
will be keenly felt by his family and
friends and in the churches with
which he was identified. However,
in death he trains, for the grace that
supported him through life was with
| him at the last and be mot death '
triumphantly. While suffering unceasingly,
ho sang some of the
sweet songs of Zion, prayed and
preached Jesus on his dying bed
Like Job of old he was able to say:
"Though they slay me, yet will I
trust Thee." Just before dying, he
expressed his desire to go and asked
his family to meet him in heaven.
Brother Booth embraced religion
and joined the church of his choice
in early life and served his church
in the capacity of a leader, oxhortor
until the time of his death and
was an ordained preacher. He was
a teacher and superintendent of the
Sunday school for many years. He
did not have the advantage of a first
class education, but by close application,
especially in the study of
the Bible ho was aole to preach sermons
worthy of many pulpits and
the best of all he lived the lived he
professed was a living witness for
Christ and the su unions found he
doing valient service in the saving
of souls to the glory of God. At
the time he was taken sick he was
attending the session of the Waceamaw
Baptist Association at Loris
and sulTered for three weeks without
a murmur.
Mr Booth was a faithful Confederate
soldier and shortW after the
war he married a daughter of the
late Petteway Carirette and seven
children, two sons and tive daughters
were born uuto them. One son,
A. H. Booth, a prominent young
lawyer is now practicing in Georgia.
The writer was acquainted with
him for forty years and under every
circumstance, always found him to
? be a true man in every respect; of
i a cheerful disposition, he looked for
the best in everything and his life
was a shining light and example to
the ccmmunitv in which ho lived.

On Friday night December 11th, I
I a large crowd gathered at the Good

Nevertheless, the young folks def
termined to enjoy themselves, engaged
in games on the yard. Everybody
seemed to enjoy themselves
and spoke in the highest terms of
the future history of the Good Hope
school. The amount raised was

The session was opened by stirring

chairman of the occasion. Supt \V.
A. Prince made a very touching welcome
address and was followed by
Hon M. M* Stanley, who also ^ave
(Ml lniurusuil^ tiiiu uu uuu^iitiuu .
The audience was very much disappointed
by not having Hon Robt. B.
Scarborough to make an address as
expected, yet we were pleasantly
entertained by Prof Mitchell of Con- ,
way High School, who gave a soul i
stirring address on better education
and more etlicient teachers. The
meeting closed with prayer by Rev
Mr Barnes.
Saturday December 12th, opened
with song service and prayer by
Rev G. i<\ Stanley. At 11 o'clock
Hon R. B. Scarborough being present,
entertained a very large and
attentive audience on the subject of
higher education. This address was
delivered in the speaker's most eloquent
manner and was enjoyed by
all present. After this most excellent
address, Supt Prince extended an
expression of appreciation of the
audience to the speaker for his kindness
in so kindly coming over and
making tho address.
At this point the meeting adjourned
for recess and din nor, after which
tho meeting reassembled to attend
to the business of the County School
Improvement Association. At tho
calling of tho roll, numerous reports
were read which fired the souls of
those present, to hear of such rapid
strides of progress, which was being
made in our county for the better
accommodations and accomplishment
of our young people upon
which rest the future progress of
our Independent Republic. There
are thirty local associations with a
j membership of one thousand. About
fifteen hundred dollars have been
raised and spent in putting in equipments,
painting, ete. Forty libraries
have been placed. After reports
were read. Prof I. J. Murray, of
Wolford College, and principal at
Loris, made an interesting talk on
1 primary teaching, and was followed
by Prof A. II. Baker (an Horry boy
and a graduite of Clemson) who delivered
a short but an interesting
talK. The president stated tliat the
meeting could not close without
hearing from Supt Princo, who in
a few very touching words delivered
his farewell address as a retiring
officer.
Miss Sara E. Dusenbury and Miss
Docie Ward were delegated to go to
Columbia.
Miss Lottie Harrelson, our president
and Mrs Bessie Debose, our
secretary deserve much credit for
the manner in which they dispatched
business Mrs Butler, the organist,
and the Loris choir also deserve to
, oe mentioned because of tho excel
lent music furnished during the on
tiro session. Miss Annie Jordan
who is secretary of the Teachers
Association remained over until th
' afternoon train Saturday.
This meeting will long be cherish
! od in our memory because of the
kind hospitality of the pnople at
' Loris. We were royally entertained
during our two days stay. Some
of them even complained because
they had so little company. The
meeting closed with the song, "Goci
; be with you till we meet again."
