SUliSCltmiON ONE DOLLA L l'Klt V K A 1 - 1 II. II. WOODWARD, lklitor i THURSDAY. NOY12 IW8. ' It appears from the election returns that the Democrats made all the niosi with little horns and wind instrume ts while the Republicans j did all the elTective work. We, are 1 sorry that Mr 15ryan was defeated as we regard him as a safe, sound and conservative leader and a pure and profound statesman. James lleury Rice, Jr., Secretary i of tiio Audubon Society, is after violators of the game laws of the State with a Big Stick. Since his encumbency he has been very active in enforcing the la^'s in reference to shooting birds and catching |)dh St.. n; ~ . , , mr ivh;o is uumg a gl'Uttl WOl'K IOV I posterity and he should be given the moral and financial supoort of the State. One of the leading measures which will in all probability be brought before the next General Assembly of the State will bo the repeal of the lien law. This question has come up annually before that body for the past several years and each time its repeal has met with defeat. But those members who advocate its repeal so persistently seem n >t to be discouraged and have faith in the old axiom of "try, try again." It is a recognized fact that the lieu law is the basis of a poor man's credit and when that is taken away from him his only means of getting supplies to make a crop is gone?you have taken away from him all that he has to oiler in the way of security to obtain the necessaries of life to sustain himself and family from the beginning to the end of the crop season. Its repeal would work a great hardship upon many a poor, ?but none-the-less deserving and industrious farmer who struggles from morning till night to make an honest livilihood. It is not only a hardship but it is a great wrong to destroy this basis of credit by legal enactment or otherwise. It is cittior the lien law or a rosort to a mortgage?if there is anything upon which a mortgage can be given? and when this is done may the good Lord have mercy on the mortgagee for the mortgagor will have nono. The stock law is again being vigorously discussed both pro and con by the people of the county. As this is a question which more directly elVects the farmer the settlement of it, in our humble opinion, should be left almost, if not entirely, to them As stated on a previous occasion in these columns the Herald will take no sides either way, but it proposes, however, to give each side a fair and impartial bowing. There is one thing whi- n must be considered and remembered and that is communications intended for these columns must be free from personalities. Al rcuuy l')u mucn uitterness and vituperation has appeared in the publie prints and the line should he drawn somewhere and somehow and the time and place is now and here. Abuse is not lo?ric neither is personalities argument. The use of them shows a lack of both lo^ic and ar^u. ment and tends to weaken the cause for which those who use them are contending. To resort to the use of them excites tho contempt rather than win the approval of in t ell*-1 gent, thinking people. As a rule they are the weapons of poltroons and cowards, who failing to sustain their position with decent language restort to the disreputable imans of besmirtching the character and befouling the person of those who may happen to disagree with them on any Question apd who has the courage of their convictions. To invite a person to leave the county simply because his convictions are not in accord with some on a question of public interest which raajf be up for discussion is a serious matter and it should not, and wo are confident is not, tolerated by the intelligence of the oomnfunity. The stock law is a question that should be dis- 1 cussed calmly and thoughtfully and J all the salient points brought out ard if there is any good in themeas ure that will work to the growth aud deyelopmenfc of the county anil * ? lie betterment of the condition o ts people let us have it, but if 01 he other hand its 'option wi >o detrimental to tin st intern ? if the county and p disastr< is o tiie prosperity of L.v eople hen >v all mdfins reject it. ?ut above ill things cut out personalities and ot correspondents confine themselves to the merits |_of the subject mder discussion.
