WOOD\VARl>r Ktlitor THURSDAY. OCTOBER 29 1908. OCR DUTY TO OCR TOWN. There is no uso hiding the fact that if it is expected to keep Conway in the procession?that if wo intend to keep the city up to the spirit of the times?the business interest must awaKo from the sleep of loth o i* i r \f n nH tn/11 lYnvonno tulilnli Uno o ?\ v? ^ r t%i*v* luuiuvi uiivu ui^u nun ti|J" | parcutly mado captive the pluck and energies of our people. We must arouse ourselves from this "dry rot " which has seemingly overtaken us and become alive and active to the exorgcncies of the situation now confronting us. It is a foregone conclusion that we cannot reasonably expect prosperity to shine upon us when wc do nothing to fan the flame and cause it to burn still brighter. If wo expect dauio fctune to smile upon us when we lay supinely down and refuse to exert ourselves to win from her the smiles which she lavishes upon those who have proven themselves worthy of her favors, then we will sooner or later awake to the realization that while we slept prosperity rolled by on the other side and otlrffrs won that which was intended for us. If we sow not it certainly follows that we will reap not and if wc do nothing to better our condition it will be in vain expect others to do for us that which U' O Itn fo Jlo/1 4. ? * ? 1 - .. w >?>! ?-? wi m Hi IU HO for ourselves. This is contrary to all reason and antagonistic to all the rules of logic. The golden present is jtho day of our opportunity and if wo would wiu success in our undertakings wo must improve each moment. Fortune, though coy and fickle, is to be won. Hut it requires unfaltering patience, undaunted courage, tireless energy and never fagging enterprise. These are the. essential elements which will win for us that recognition which we have earned and the wheels ol progress kept moving onward and upward. Nature has been extravagant in the bestowal of her gifts upon us, and it only needs the art, tho en orgy and the enterprise of man tc bring them under subjection and utilize them to the good of mankind, From less favored sections come? the tumult the noise and the bustle ol thrift, of industry and of enterprise How about Conway? I)o we heai these gladsome sounds within our midst? Are wo not unfamiliar tc the music of tho spindles and the loom? Have we a cotlou seed oi mill within our gates? Arc there evidences of a healthy industrial, business and commercial activity tc be seen here? Fairness to ourselves compels us reluctantly though it raav be to answer, with a few exceptions, no to all these questions, yot they are questions fraught with much interest to us and ladened with grave responsibilities to us both as citizens and business men of a common wool. True Conway has made wonderful progress in the recent past, and her people deserve much credit for what they have accomplished, but then it is not to the achivcmonts of by gone days that we must look for the future of Conway but in the triumphs of the days to come lies our hope and our salvation. Then let us be up and doing. Let us seize every opportunity and turn it to good account. Let us go to work in earnest and put our shoulders to the wheel and give a long pull, a strong pull and a pull altogether and wo will soon make Conway blossom as the green bay tree. The preparatory work fo r the in stallation of electric lights is progressing in a satisfactory manner. It is claimed by those who are in a position to know, that tho use of these lights will be as cheap, if not cheaper, than burning kerosonc. Then there is tho cleanliness and ' convenience to be considered, to say nothing of the increased candle power of the light and the reduction of the danger from lire. Upon the whole it will be seen that the use ol electricity for lighting purposes will be far more economical than tho use of kerosene. Now for the cotton factory and cuttdij sAKl'bil mill To this end lei us alldirect our energies until thej are accomplished facts. i 11 mm whri-lt I ?Hl u ? About one of prettiest, and nt tho sametime ou-e of the most remunerative businesses for Conway that we knowof jus*., now is poultry farming Wo do not mean the breeding of fancy strains, while this might bo done with profit and pleasure as a side line, bi't the common barnyard fowls, turkoys, geese and ducks for market purposes. The capital required for this purpose is comparatively small and the profits are large and sure. There ire numerous excellent ranges near Conway where | poultry can range, scratch for their own living and thrive and wax fat,and requiring but little attention, such as preparing the birds for market, looking after the biddies and gathering in the eggs. There is no danger of the scare crow of the cot ton planter?over production--as the lien and her products always lind a ready sale at a more or less largo profit. The enterprise is well worth tryinsr, anyway, and we are confident that the experience of those who engage in the business for the money that can be gotten out of it, will justify us in the assertion that it is one of the best paving businesses opened jusii now wnon i'ie cosi <)l production is considered. The Tammany Tiger has got. his ire up and has pulled out of the Democratic ranks. This action on the part of Tammany will undoubtedly give that State to the Republicans, Tammany can always be counted upon to do the wrong thing at the wrong time and this is all that is certain*about that organization. Next Tuesday will tell the tale. Then we will know who will bo President of these United States?Taftor Bryau. Conway has the reputation, at least, of being a dry town, but for several day# last week it might appropriately be termed very wet. Concrete pavements for the busi ness section of Conway is the crying demand just now.
