WOODWARD, Editor THURSDAY. OCTOB1 : 1908. There is not much encouvnge. mcul for the organization of a civic league in Conway when the shade trees we already have are allowed to bo ruthlessly cut down and wontonlyand indiscriminately mutilated by the Conway Right and Power co. to make room for their poles ai d wires. We submit thai this destruction of our shade trees was entirely unnecessary as the company could have utilized the middle of the street, or some other portion, at d it would have answer .d their purposes 4.w.4 4l.~ . l 1 1 ~~ juni unu Sil I lie WlbUUUb UU(I I blU II U 1 C.\" pense to the company. We are confident that it never was the intention of the late municipal authorities to cede to the company the right when they granted the franchise to destroy or mutilate any of the civic improvements that then existed or miglit hereafter exist, and we do not believe it to be the policy of the present administration to permit such things to be done. They have the interests of our city too much at heart to countenance such procedure; they are too public spirited to stand idly by and witness the I destruction of any of the civic improvements we now have. Nothing herein must bo construed as antagonizing the company in any of its undertakings in furtherance of the project. We are too clearly on record concerning this matter for the idea to be entertained for a moment* Our only object is to call public attention to this very important matter and endeavor to preserve our shade trees as much as possible. Still the work of wiring places of business and dwellings preparatory to the introduction of electric lights goes bravely on and it now really appears that before the current is turned on nearly every business house and dwelling in the nit.v O v.' will be provided with this modern business and household convenience Tn addition to those already men lioned the following must be added to the list of progrossve citi/.eiis: Store?S P 11 awes. Wilmington is to have an Elk feast next month, and the leading attraction advertised to draw a crowd is a marriage to take place in a lion's den. It is said that the committee having this feature in charge is Hooded with offers from candidates for matrimony to make their election sure in this sensational manner.
