II ilMCltl PTION ON K DOLLAR PKH YKAH H. 11, WOODWARD, Keillor THURSDAY, MAY 14, 1008 A prominent business man raid the other day, speaking about the advantages that would accrue to Conway by the establishment of a cotton factory here, that there would be very little difficulty in organizing a strong company for this purpose if the right men would take hold of the project and engineer its finances, that is men in whose fi nancial ability to make good the people have confidence. The Herald lias taken this view of the situation and has so expressed itself time and again. There is onough capital with plenty to spare for investment in other legitimate enterprises, lying in comparative idleness that could be profitable used in this way and that would pay handsome dividends to the investors. This proposition is so manifest that it is a self evident fact and consequently needs neither argument nor logic to establish it as such. Then, if we have the capital, the energy to do and dare and men of unquestioned financial ability, of sound business judgment and far reaching foresight in the art of money making- -men who are able to successfully compete with the 44Napoleons of Finance" and the "Captains of Industry," why is it that we have not had a cotton factory long ago? The answer is obvious. The doctinc of in activity in reference to home enterprises and home development, is the fountain head of the trouble. An observer of current events will come to the conclusion at once that petty jealousies are the prime reason for the condition of affairs that now exist in Conway. One man is reluctant to make a step forward for the reason that others will hound him down with the cry that he is doing what ho is doing with a view of farthering his own personal interests regardless of the interests of others. There are others who have this or that reason for not taking the lead in an undertaking which promises so much for the welfare of town and country, and all agree is the very thing for the promotion of the industrial interests oi' our city and of vast benefit to our county. This fatal doctrine of waiting for others do something which he himself ought to do is the only reason why Conway has not a cotton factory today. An elTcetive remedy is close at hand and that is unity of purpose, a concert of action, a community of interests. Let us throw aside our childishness which stands like a bulwalk between oursolf aiul our own interest as well as that of the county at large. Some one should take the lead in this matter and that lead should be taken immediately. The following has been handed to the 14Herald Man" for publication. 1 nftumnnll at! i r? umo I... v. u>i n nn nitiiuni \jy il rupsentive and thus his identity isi clearly established, room is made for it in the columns of the Herald y otherwise no attention whatever would have been paidjto the exquisite evidence of an addled brain, with the exception of throwing the rare literary production on the floor to be trampled under the feet of the multitude who daily throng the Herald oflico paying their subscription and adding their names to the Herald's list of subscribers. The thiug reads as follows: "Mr Editor: Will you please be so 4'kind as to have some one to in"vestigate 'Hill Hud's' statement. ?.f "last week as to the size of his "squashes and ascertain as to how "much longer they will grow? 1 1 "live eight miles from his farm but "if they continue to grow until "July 1st will of course have to "move further. These sloughs of sickness and sulTering and death arc on one of the principle streets of Conway where her children, in part the hope of the future of the g^and old Independent Republic pass up to the shrine of learning to quaff at the fountain of knowledge. It is there these rose buds of promise are liable to receive the germs of dis- * ease, Some one is to blame for the continued existence of these cess pools which are continually harvesting victims for the bride of death. Who those are who are responsible for them wo are not. prepared to say Did we know we would not hesitate | a moment to call them by name, but we do insist that as long as these * holes were made by the railroad peo- ^ pie for their own convenience, prolit p ind gain they should be made to till n bhem in and level them with the fi street, and it is the duty of tho city a iuthorlties to see that it is done or know the reason why.
