\ XXI. HIS i am. The Town has Made Another ? Step Forward. NIGHT TO BE BRIGHT AS DAY. Tlic Municipal Autliortica of Conway arc Determined to Have tlccl ric l.ijflit*. Mayor Sniitli and Aldermen lluck and Murah aa a Com mittec Visit fiuorirctown to Inspect Plant. An Expert Electrician on the (irotinU. For the hist several years there has been no end of talk about electric lights for Conway. Indeed so often has has this subject bobbel up that it, looked tit one time like the whole thing, like a good many other momentus measures along the line of internal improvement, was to be talked to death, and the realization of the long expected and much desired convenience was as far from us as it ever was. But not so. Mayor Smith and his Board of Aldermen, have determined to do something tor posterity. Never before has so much work been done in Conway as is now being done, and in saying this we cast no rellection on previous councils. They are the ones who blazed the way and Ill till!" It pUSML'lt; nil till* piCSCIlti council to ,accomplish what they have undert^'en, unci are now doing, (leorge Sessions, Hal Buck and Leon Burroughs with their advisors have done good service for Conway. Their paths were rough. They had to go slow and break down the barriers and prejudices and left the affairs of the town and its inutitudinous interests in as good a condition us could be reasonably expected. Their term was short?only one year each-?and they could but start a work of improvement before they would have to turn over the reins of government into other hands. They are pioneers in the developeinent and improvement of Conway, and the Herald is proud to say to these men who served their town without money and without price to each and every one of t hem, that thov did remarkably well under the restrictions of their otlice; the Herald will say well done and it means it. Our present Mayor and Board of Aldermen enjoy enlarged powers. They have tne right to bond the town for not more than $20,000 for internal improvements. These bonds can and will be floated tor not more than 4 1-2 per cent per annum, Darl in#ton, we helieve, just the other day, installed an electric li#ht and water power plant without usin# a dollar's worth of bonds anil what Darlington has done, Conway can and will do. Never was a man more determined to catch up the threads dropped hy former councils through force of circumstance, and weave them into a stroll# whole than is Mayor Smith, the internal improvement committer and the council. Everybody is workin# in harmony and we have vet tc find the fitat kick re#'stered. A tremendous amount of work has been done*on the streets and on private property. Debts have beer paid and today Conway has nc debt either floatin# or by bonds. Then why can't we have electrii li#hts and a sewera#e system foi that, matter? Those thin#s aro comintr. Mayoi Smith has set his head to this, ant those who know him, knows whei he says yes he means yes, and In has the moral support of the peoph to strengthen his hands. A man from Dumber#, an exper electrician, who has wide and varie< experience, is in Conway and thi matter willreceive his careful at tention, \pd from all the influence now at w'ork the Herald is justifie in saying that Conway will soon se her streets made to shine at nigh as brilliantly as the|noonday sun an her property protected by an am pi water supply. Custody of Cliilil ItciliaiilH Willi the rattier. The case brought nntler a Habeas ' Corpus writ last, week by Mrs Temperance S. Iliohardson against her husband, Benj. A. Richardson, in the etl'ort to regain the custody and possession of her three year old baby, attracted a large crowd at the heat ing , and did not fail to awaken considerable interest even among those who did not hear it in the court house, but heard about it on the outsido. As we went, to press without* last, issue the trial was join^ ahead. and the decision had not been rendered. After all the witnesses had been sworn the. magistrates retired and remained out. but. a few minutes when they returned andsigiyd an order as follows: "Upon hearing the within petition, and after making full investigation and consideration thereof, it is ordered, adjudged and decreed that the prayer of the petition he refused; that the custody of the child remain with the father where it now is, he not to remove it bevou<! the limits of the State; and that the petitioner, Temperance S. Richardson, remaining within the State shall not he prohibited from visiting the child." Public sentiment was all in favor of the husband in the matter from the beginning. LATER Several warrants had been issued against the parties named. Against B A Richardson his wife swore out two warrants, one chargingudnltrv, the other larceny, t he latter growing out of a sale by l> A Richardson of certain property, a sewing machine and other articles, claimed by his wife. On the day that the Magistrate tried the question of the custody or the child, B A Richardson swore out a warrant against his wife and M Wisbv, charging them with adultry. A few days after the trial took place in regard t<> the child, the parties appeared before Magistrate J curette and took up all the warrants that had been issued, having appar ( entiy settled all matters in dispute. It is reported that the parties have , gone back together, hut this report has not been verified. ( The first of the week M Wisbv'returned from Plorida and has taken ( charge of his strawberry farm again l as if nothing had happened, MajriAtratc's Conn. The court of Magistrate J N , Jen rette was engaged last Thursday i in the trial of S .1 Lewis vs. Charley Johnson involving a laborer's conr tract in connection also with a i house of Mr Lewis in which Johnson 1 lived, and two acres of land which Mr Johnson had planted. ^ rui - . i i i f ii "j." 11(3 parties nan lauen out about the work and services rendered by ^ Mr Johnson, Lewis claimed that his j work was not- satisfactory. Ili' discharged him and brought this suit to regain possession of the house and the. field, Johnson declaring ho ^ would hold these until the end of 0 the year. t It appeared at the trial that the trade for the two acres of cleared ^ land around the little house was separated from the rest of the bargain, and after hearing all the evidence the Magistrate made an order that Johnson should vacate i- the house at the end of thirty days, e but that he should retain the erov ?s he had planted in the land. if It is supposed that tho pni'tios 1, have since agreed upon a valuator le of the crop, paid over the amount ;h and the parties satihod in statu <pu ?a The defendant was not represent ed at the trial,'but. the IMnintitY wai represented by II II Woodward 10 Ksqr. 1 4 u* ^ With a few cans of Ar<fo Rei Salmon in the pantry, and an Ar<j tied Salmon Cook Hook, the house wife is always prepared for unex is pected company.
