THURSDAY, JANUARY 24 1907 A Plea for Prohibition. Editor Ilorry Herald: In your issue ( f ' unary 8, there appeared ? von editoiiu1 eolumn '.< < -%r " ! ,(' 'V"b t hj , 'l ' . In iat plane 1 Ik ve heard so union about prohibition iiv>t probibi ting when applied to the sale of liquors it disgusts me every time I ' boar it fiom the stump or see it in t ?c no" -p per-. You say ''In so t-i i o i'Mtirci no.) probibi- ' v'i <s > f. u ' \\ , dun t ynu say pr hnbi lu'ti murder is a failur< in ?lorr\? Prohibition of theft is a failure? Prohioition of adultery is a failure or prohibition of any vice so far as Horry is concerned is a failure. They are all failures to a ' certain extent, I am sorry to say, ' but would you have our legislature abolish all of our prohibitory laws simply because they do not prevent a man from uetually committing a crime? Or would you legalize the t hese crimes simply to bring more revenue to vour town and conn ly? No, Mr. Editor, you would not. 1 know you too well. Then why not be consistent and treat the prohibition of the liquor trafiic the same way ? Did not Clod make the first prohibition law when he placed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and forbid them to eat of the tree of good and ovil? Did ho abolish or make any change in the law because in had been violated? If God in his infinite wisdom could not make a law that would prohibit, how can we expect our State and national Legislatures to do so? No law prohibits but prohibitory laws do lessen crime and prohibition has decreas crime in Horry notwithstanding your paper to the contrary I am neither in favor of dispensary or bar rooms. I am proud that Horry has neither. It is a deplorable fact that lots of whiskey, even enormous quantities, are being brought into tho county from other States, but common sense teaches us that the more convenient it is tho more it will boused. Don't cry the prohibition law down as a failure but with other good agencies join in and see the law we now have are more rigidly enforced Newspapers are powerful factors in moulding public sentiment for or against the liquor business. You can do more than any other agency except the church to drive this trafiic * in men's souls from this blessed i country of ours. You have heard ' the story of the man and the bear. 4 If you cannot defend the prohibition . law please stand off and you will see one of the fierest battles you have i ever witnessed. 4 Our laws are all right and we want ^ to see them enforced. I cannot see how any right think- i ing man can favor the sale of whis- 4 key in any form. a You say you get no no revonue ^ from the whiskey that is being sold i in the county now. This statement 4 is true and I ain proud of it. Neith- a er do I or the average citizen of the ^ county want any revenue from a 4 busin ss that fills our jails, pen- 4 ' " mcuiiurivtt, usyiums wiin our Doys 1 and girls. Keep it as far from us as possibl". Let every mother and very mother's son in Horry do all in their power not to have the sale of whiskey legalized in Hony again. While 1 am now a citizen of a sister State ibere is no place on earth dear to me as my native county?Horry. Now dear voter, drop your legislators a line and ask them whatever they do, don't legalize the sale of liquor in Horry again, Let her be known as a prohibition county and do all in your power to havo the law enforced in your respective neighborhood, and thousands of your fellow citizens will ever be proud of their nativity.
