THURSDAY, DECEMBER L'7 11HW l.skc Swamp Tldiniiijts, As 1 am a constant reader of the Herald, and have not seen anything in its columns from this section in sometime, I deem it necessary to hat e tbe outside world know something of the progress of this section. Our communnity lacks only one feature of being the garden spot of t ho Independent Republic of Horry, and that is, wo need a railroad running through this section and connecting with some other point. Such a feature as this would improve our shipping facilities and enhanco the value of our lands. Wo hope at no very distant periol to have this much needed convenience. We have a healthy community with good educational advantages. Our school at Lake Swamp academy is in a progressive stage and is conducted by Mr. J. Ilarrv Neely as the L'rim ipal, assisted by Miss Ora Tyler. We are glad to sec the good ~ effects which are materializing from the earnest woric of our efficient instructors. Mr. Editor. I am what one m i ch t call an educational "crank" Why is it not sr with all hoys and girls? Why do not all strive to obtain an education? These are <|iicstions 1 cannot answei. 1 cannot understand why so many voting people spend their time in idleness while vast fields of knowledge are before them inviting entrance and to drink at their fountains. We arc now in the morning of life, but | precious moments are going by unimproved. Soon life's sun will be waning and, oh! will it look down on a lifc spent in vain? Let us determine that it must not be so. It = is rot a hard matter now for a boy J or girl who possesses will and en- * ergy to oblain an education. Many ^ opportunity present themselves to us if we will only take advantage of ^ them. The young pooole of today i nave many more giowinc opportu- ^ nities than did those whose heads are adorned with hoary hairs, yet these, ' by their will, energy and determina- i lion have carried our> country on- < ward and i pward in the path of no bilitv until today, whether her peo- i pie sail acros> the dark blue deep or < traverse some distant land, they are < "respected as never wa? a people before. Shall it coutinu.. so, or shall * our beloved country go downward < because we, the young people of to- . day, are failing to equip ourselves to I meet the many demands that will t surely come to us when we go into real life? A decision must bo made now. It lies within our power to keep our country great. We can begin at horn j now by studying every spare moment. We must never en tain low and degrading th ughis, but must let ihem be absolutely pure. We must have high ideals and with an irresistab'e determination attain to hem. We must get upon a h'gbcr plane of life than we have yet found, In order to do this we must kc( p continually in touch with great lives. This we can do by reading good literature which tends to elevate the mind and lead us on to nobler, better and purer lives, flood literature is doing more to place the world upon a higher basis of : civilization and Christianzation than any other agency abroad. Hut on hot on the other hand bad literature is doing more to corrupt and poison the mind, and in this way drag down all that is pure and upright. T^et us refrain from rending such literature, Let us lead pure upright lives so that when life's sun is slowly waning we can lo.k back \ p ?n a life well spent,|so that when we have ceased to exist in this world our influence ior good will live and our good works continue just the same as when our spirits animated a mortal body, then we shall stand upproved be.ore God. 1 hope to hear from other school girls and boys through the Herald how much they are interested in education and Christianity. Gussie Worloy. $IOO Reward, $IOO. The readers of this paper will be pleased to learn that there is at least one dreaded disease that science has been able to cure in all its stages, and that is Catarrh. Hall's Catarrh Cure is the only positive cure now known to the medical fraternity. rn4???l, iw.: a constitutional disoxse, requires a constitutional treatment Hall's Catarrh Cure is taken internally, acting directly upon the blood and mucous surface o? the system, thereby destroying the foundation of the disease, and giving the patient strength by building up the constitution and assisting nature in doing its work. The proprietors have so much faith in its curative powers that they offer One Hundred Dollars for any ease thai it fails to cure. Send for list of testimonials. Address F. J. CHENEY & CO., Toledo,*O.
