THE HORRY HERALD. S u - si Thursday August 9 1906. ! ' V I cinalc education anil I'm' Suf- > frairc. H t*Y W. A. I'ttlNCI:. , Mr. Kditor? During illy eighteen t years of experience in the school \ room as a teacher, I find parents 1 who object to educating their daugh- I ters. 1 wish to inform those who i read the newspapers, what the woman's mission is. Nearly six thousand years ago, Kve was created, and given to Adam for "An help meet" but if Adam understood her duties and privileges, he failed to impart the knowledge to his descendents. Till the coming of Christ, woman was a slave, but in this Christain land of liberty and freedom she has been made the subject of education and moral instruction. The danger now is, that the spirit ..~r....... i <^? < ,... .....l in li'iui hi iiui\ tiu > aim' nn; uu aim annihilate all social and political distinction between the sexes. There are those pretended philosophers, who contend that women ought to dress in maleattire. and be allowed to vote, hold public ollice, legislate and to command armies. To thisdoct rine I soviet us as sensible beings tuin a deaf ear. It seems to the writer a mat tor of surprise t hai man, who has made so many discoveries and sought out so many inventions, should never have found out the proper uses of woman. She was imade for "an helpmeet" for man; that is the language of the Scriptures What sort of a help would be meet or proper for man, suitable to his condition hero? Labor consist of two parts: There are two kinds of manual labor, two I. i i m I < nf nwtivil ? i Mil fn'ii l.'iiwlc <>r intellectual labor, each necessary to the success of the other. In the woods ami fields, on the waters, in the shops, and in the mines. Was man doomed to labor and earn his living by the sweat of his face? lint his labors in these will not. by themselves insure comfort; for he has to clothed, to eat food which has noon cooked and dressed ond to live in houses. Mere is another field of manual labor which requires more decentliness, patience and moral courage, hut less strength than the task out of doors. For this sphere was woman constitutionally adapted while man was made to legislate for, and administer laws among the adult age. Woman was designed to instruct, control and govern the wayward natures of the young and tender. It is the mother that writes the tirst lesson on the human mind. She shapes the chatacter of the man. and woman that leads to honour or to shame; to happiness or destruction. Clod has endowed her with intellect like man. and with an immortal soid like his. Hut with more modesty, more tenderness and a confiding nature. Her mind may not be adopted to complicated calculations, but it is better suited than that of man's to the nice arrangements of domestic matters, to the knowledge of youthful wants and necessities, to soothe and subdue, to love the. nature of both old and voting, thus has nature fashioned woman; and if we take nature for our tfuido, can we possibly mistake woman's mission, or fail to understand the principles on which her education should be conducted? She is to be properly fitted by education for the Held wherein Clod designed her to labor. She was sent to adorn as well as moralize the world. 13ut she is uot merely to be looked at and admired, and those kdrls who think themselves angels, will soon learn that they are disconnected with society, unhappy and everywhere out of place, Worn in is part of the human race, intended as a help for man, but not to labor in his shops, act as his teamster or to delve in his mines, lie who so treats her will find his house and every thin# about it dreary and uncomfortable. The beauty of his household will quickly fade, and the heart intended for a fountain of happiness will be turned to bitterness. Those who have experienced it know that the proper arrangement of household matters requires a cultivated taste and a mind that lias kept pace with all the improvements of civilization These matters can he so ordered as to make everything beautiful to the eye and music to the ear; to afford pleasure through all of the live senses of touch, taste, sight, hearing and smelling. A woman with her smiles" and warmed with her love mav be termed the central sun of a truly happy home. Now let us imagine a home to the reverse. A dreary comfortless dwelling filled with harsh sounds, where everything is out of place, tossed about, and looks ugly. In the midst of dirt and gloom stands a scowling saltern, whose looks send a chill through the heart of every guest. The man who makes a slave of his wife may expect to have such a home as above statMl. The intelligent reader will remember sti iking examples in the savage state of society of the evils of such a system. Savages have very ugly wives, and the comforts of their rude homes arc not often equal to those of thodumb brutes. There is on record in sacred Scriptures an example of the danger of allowing woman to stand between niau and the world and its tcmpta tionsjof allowing her in short to take upon herself the guidance of public affairs. When Adam was made the proprietor of Eden, (Jod entered into compact, imposing conditions by which he was to remain in his blissful ^ m Late, ik?ut Ionian, tempted by thc| tther w,f htl evil, took it on heridf to question the propriety of his ag'reoment, violated it and it used Ler husband to violate it. thereby he lost his seat in paradise ,nd doomed his descendants to toil, uttering nul death. In this Chrisian land we believe in femaleedueaion bei ng uroporly regulated. Here, ivhere she is allowed to teaeh and egislate around the family altar. Here we behold races of men superior to all other races in the world Here, and here only, do we find true patriots and honest statesmen. How wonderful compared with those of other countries are the comforts of these Christian homes. It was the legislation and teachings of a Christian mother which made Washington. And from a woman was Christ, our Saviour, the Redeemer of j the world, connected with man. And thus woman, by her weakness when tempted, yielded to tho sin which brought death into the world, she was also t he mother of death's compieror; and as a mother and a sister when man assigns her her proper place, and prepares her for It,, she will atone for her 'ormcr folly, produce to the world a race of Washingtons, many eminent, statesmen and heroic j generals, and herself, guided by the glorious doctrine of Jesus Christ, will do much to load many wayward unto him in whom is eternal life, Galveston's Sea Wall makes life now as safe in that city as on the higher uplands. 10. \V.(Joodloe, who resides on Duttonst., in W aco, Texas, needs no sea wall for safety, lie writes: ' I have used Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption for the past live years and it keeps me 11 .... .1 . r ' n-,' .
