When one views the free rein given to small boys and girls these days lie is impressed with the idea that children are not reared now by the rigid ruh s of days gone by. Time was when every boy and girl had to obey the command of father and mother or bear the consequences of the ever ready rod. The boys were taught to work, and to work hard, on the farm in rural communities, and in the towns they were taught something useful. The girls were taught to do useful things too. Doth boys and girls were taught to stick to whatever they started and the rule with many fathers in former days was to make a boy stick to a job once he undertook to accomplish it. Such training has produced some of the createst. and w'wovi mmi that ever lived . What a dilTerout training will produced is easily guess ed . We do not say that boys and girls of today do not receive good training. Some of those old time ways are still preserved, we are thankful to say. and enforced in more than a few families. We are speaking now of the greater number of families one becomes ae(pniinted in which all the boys and girls arc allowed to do as they please. They are allowed to grow up with the idea that pleasure must always and should be placed ahead of work unci the more serious Walks of life. They get everything they desire that money can buy. if their parents can spare it, and sometimes whether they can spare the money or not. Idleness is the principal tiller of their lives and they are not even made to be diligent in their studies at school. Such a state of things is not calculated to produce great men and women. not even useful ones. Chil dreu trained in this wa> are of no value as men and women and who is to blame but the parents? One may ask, where are the business men of Conway that we are informed are advancing the business interests of the town? Where are the stockholders of the warehouse who put their good money into the enterprise only to let it remain idle and not even do the community any good? The town is in the hands of her business men, and* is make or break according to the action they take in matters of this kind. The State candidates arrived in i on way for the campaign meeting a day ahead. Myrtle Beach was an attraction for the candidates to spend Thursday evening, but only one or two went over, the others remaining in Conway as adording the best ground for that quiet work that always counts more than the speaking from the the stand. The ollice of Magistrate in Horry county is hardly worth fighting for, especially from a money standpoint, for the salary of a magistrate in Horry county is small, yes. very small. But this same magistrate's oflice is sometimes a good stepping stone to something higher, and in some sections the candidates are announcing for this position right along. The summer excursions have been few but the picnics in various portions of the county have taken place as usual and the candidates for county offices have used them for the purpose of stump speeches just as they have always dono since the primary plan was adopted. There is society and society these days. There is a kind that was at one time unknown at Conway, but which is gradually drifting in. T The Stal?? candidates have coin" and cone. The frequent rains of late have shortened the crops in Horry county in some communities. Reports have come in from sections that are not encouraging. In other neighborhoods conditions are about as i usual.
