The building of the first railroad in Horry county, giving the county its first real connection withtheoutside world was a costly experiment to the four townships that footed th bondf, but who is there to say that this expense was not justified if this inducement was in fact needed to bring the road to Conway? The bonds must have been necessary in order to induce the buildingof the roaJ. for the people of the county were not fools then, as they certainly are not now. and they would not have sj>ent this large sum of money for nothing. If the road had not been built, it would no doubt have been years before this county would have had any railroad connection with the outside world, aod the county would today be much further behind than she is. The first road has lead to others and there are roads still to be built. Railroad building in Horry was started none to early. James Henrv Rice. Jr.. sjkmH last week in Con way and at Myrtl lh*ach. His attentiou was called to certain charges made in some of the papers relative to the evidence brought out by the invest igating committee as to offers of stock in the Carolina Field to the directors of the State dispensary. He yet says as he did before the committee that if any such letters were ever written from his oflice he has no recollection of them. He is correct when he says that there were no charges in fact made. A nd even if such otTers were made there would be no reason in trying to make something out of nothing", for no graft or wrong of any kind could be made out of that. The State papers understood the matter from the beginning and not even the State newspaper made any comments. And these State papers are just as ready as ever to pay him big v?rir?Afi fnr . ..ci: ? ~UIUII CO \\J 1 JKUJl li.lltion above his signature. The county campaign is costly to most candidates. There are always those who will take advantage of a candidates' ]>ositiou to ask him for contributions to this and that while he is making nis rounds over the county, and he is expected to give liberally to every man in the neighborhood who has lost his horse oi suffered otner misfortune. It is wrong to imjose on them in this manner and every good voter should try to suppress the evil. That the great demand for cottages to rent at Conway cannot be supplied is to be deplored, for nothing would tend more to substantial growth here than plenty of houses to rent to those who wish to come here and live. Considering the prices realized for dwelling houses it would appear to be a safe an 1 paying investment for anybody with capital. t I??? ;AT 5LAI 20 CLERKS chants can fill in big money. He had been told, he had forgotten by whom or from whence hi* mind had received the j impression, it was nothing definite, but nevertheless he had been told I that Tillman had received a piano from a whiskey house, and he took no pains about telling a< much to a lawyer friend who wanted to collect a whiskey claim. Even Til.man's worst enemies give him credit for honesty. No greater efforts have ever been made to discover something wrong in a man's life. And ai efforts have met with failure. So Lyon expected to succeed in something that had been impossible up to that time. Hut Lvon also failed and made no excuses for it. Tillman was justly iu'ligoaul at tVie in-inuatious made, and no honest mar. can blame him for it. .It is imperative that Horrv counts' have longer terms of court, or a June term two weeks in length Every year the cases arc accumulating on the common pleas dockets and only a case or two can be disj>osed of at each session of the court. The rights of the people to speedy trial of their cases before the courts cannot be denied, and we bring this matter to the candidates for the Legislature. It is plain that Lumpkin started the race for United States Senator because lie thought there was a chance for hi< election. When he found there was none, he withdrew, showing by this action that he is a man of verv good sense. The voters at the county campaign j meetings win l>o >uro to a>U* each candidate fi r the House of Representatives to state how he stands on the whiskey question The candii dates had as well yet ready to face the music. The people of Horry are good in sizing up a man. The candidates need not fear that they will not be . thoroughly investigated and considi ered. for the people ?ill know well who they are voting for. Col. Lumpkin got just a little no, torlety out of his late political ex, perience. for the newspapers and magazines everywhere at once went to asking: "Who is Lumpkin?" Clarendon News.
