In ai.l their proceedings so far, the commissioners entrusted with the erection of the new court house and jail have acted carefully and wisely, taking due time to consider their actions. They have shown great skill in placing the bonds for the purpose of raising the all important funds and they have made a sale of them that does them great credit as careful business men and shows the great confidence the outside world has in Horry County. Four and one half per cent, is a very low rate of interest and lower than it was expected the commission would be able to get. They have also done well in the selection of their plans for the new buildings, and their selection of a site for the new court house has met with general approval. They have performed all their duties carefully and with an eye to the best interest of the town and emmtvr ~J . Somehow we arc sorry for Co). W. W. "Lumpkin. Would a real intelligent man suppose that ho could bent lien Tillman for the United States Senate? When you think of it you are convinced that Lumpkin must be running simply for advertising purposes. How he can expect to be elected against such odds is more than perhaps he himself can figure out. Perhaps lie intends to get some advertising out of it, and when he becomes a candidate later on for some other otlice, he will be known to the people, for his present venture will be sure to make the people remember him, not because they wish to vote for him, however but just for the simple audacity and gall that the man evidently has. No matter how hopeless the cause of a candidate may be it is wrong for an audience to deny him the privilege of a respectful hearing. Mr. Lumpkin at the opening mei ting of the State campaign was not ac corded this privilege and what lm much desired to say was lost in \\ ilu cheers for Tillman who was not even there. This experience of Cob Lumpkin's will hardly be repeated at the remaining!meetings and he will be allowed to recount his reasons for comic# out for office as much as he pleases. When he arrives in Horry he will no doubt receive better treatment than he did at the opening, for Horry is generally willing to hear everything there is to be said whether 1 she swallows it all or part or none. The farmeus should not forget ] that in order to keep up the price of their main mouey crop, cotton, they [ must maintain their organization j which was formed for the purpose of getting better prices and which was 1 so effective last year. While 'plow- ' ing the eotton let them remember ' that it is important that their minds ( bo kept busy on future plans for < better organization and better re sults for their efforts. Without an organized body of business nen with money and free hearts to spend some of it, a town is in a bad way in the matter of enterprise. An ent< rprising business man and citizen is excused of course for showing interest in his private business a flairs, but he should be required to show some interest in the common welfare of both himself and his com * munity and if he lacks this quality, he should not be excused for this great lack of duty. The Herald for the past many years has been advising that the town should make an effort to get more manufacturing establishments here. Take away the lumber plants and the town has nothing left along this line of industry, so any thing we may have said has apparently been disregarded.
