Some few cases of small pox yet to report. Lots of rain last week, but nevertheless the farmers are busy preparing their lands for another year's eroy. Miss Annie Bishop of Berkeley county is spending some time visiting friends and relatives in this section. J. W. Cook, 0. W. Cannon and .T. B. Cox all of Myrtle Beach were I here last Sunday John B. Owens has accepted a po sit ion with the Winyah Bumbor Co. as engineer. Sunday was very unfav orablc, notwithstanding the writer took a very pleasant stroll which was very enio\ ablo. Holly Items, Kditor Herald ?Seeing no items from this place, I feel it my duty to let you and the general public know that we are still in the land and among the living. The measles is prevailing in this neighborhood, and we occasionally hear of a ease 01-T..C small pox. We have a hustling . eighborhood and wo hope the A. C. L. IT IT Co , will extend their railroad to Tittle 1*00 Dee, as wo need better shipping utilities. I don't think the farmers through this section will increase the acreage in cotton over last year. The tobacco acreage will be about the same as last year. Our people have long ago learned that it pays to raise their food suplilies n li*.MW. The contractors have just completed the Grad.v lodge near Galivants Ferry, and it is a nice piece or work. I think that our young contractors, W. I). Murron and Kelly Lewis deserves credit in performing their work so nicely. We were pained to hear of the death of N.M. Mishoe, who died on last Sunday night at his homo near Cool Spring. The Herald is a welcome visitor in our home, and its pages are closely read and is praised above all other papers my father takes. Wo wish it much success. Pearl ie Edwards. On January 21, liMlti, Miss Elorric, the charming daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Sarvis, was happily married to Mr (J. O. Johnson, the prosperous son of Mr. and Mrs. II. 15. W. Johnson, Rev 11. 15. Roberts, performing the ceremony. Mr. Johnson is one of tho most prosperous young farmers of our section. Kin*/ Prof Prince was mistaken when he says that he (King) was a private soldier in the 10th regiment in the war between the States. lie was a 2nd Sargeant in Co F, 1st S. C. V.. Gregg's old brigade, A. P. Hill's Division, Stonewall Jackson's Corps in the army of Northern Virgin.a He was badly wounded in each thigh during the seven days battles, lie was again wounded a captured at Get.vsburg. 1 was captured in the Wilderness the following summer and was sent to Fort Delaware. Representative Spivey inroduced an amendment striking out his proviso, and made quite a pirited speech advocating his mendment. lie said in part: Mr. Speaker, and Gentlemen: We vho are supporters at tin? Morgan ( all lay especial stress noon the ' act that this is a democratic mens I ire. We boast that it contains the ' ssence of local self government. \ nd I am free to say that this is he feature that most appeals to me hat of letting each county settle or itself the method it prefers in uuidling the whiskey question. Vnd yet we lind in this bill a clause orbidding certain counties voting \ m this new method. Speaking for t ny county, I think 1 can say that he principal cause for voting out he Dispensary in Horry was that , mder the present law dispensaries veie allowed outside of incorporated towns there being three in the iounty, each without any police irotection. 1 venture to say that the chief ; sauso prevailing in all the counties vho voted it out, was the alleged .orruption and bad management at he State dispensary. Now, as this . >i 11 proposes to wipe out the head lispensary and authorize the estab- , ishmerit of County dispensaries, 1 ail to understand why these conn ies, along with all the others, shou'd >e denied the privilege of passing , >n that new method If these county x lispensaries are such good things, if j hey be an improvement on the pre ent method why deprive those conn ^ ies of the benefits to bo derived Po do this I contend, gentlemen, vould bo undemocratic.
