OUR COF Thursday December 21 1905. [>ai?y. While the year 1905 is near a close and in a senee may be forgo I ton, the era of prosperity, which has prevailed this year should be long remembered . This year may be truthfully noted in history as the most progress ive year in many, and as the year passes away we hope the era of prosperity will not pass but con tinue with us for years to conio. rrt - turpentine, cotton and tobacco, I which are the leading products of | tliis section, have brought a fair price this year, therefore our farmers have generally paid up their debts n full and savedt some money. A few more years like this will doubtless place the farmers on a solid basis and give them a more omplete control of the market. The rapid progress made by the farmers of this section this year is extensively marked by the many new buildings which have gone up oid are going up, and also in tic u:!ui<?s pas -ing i ir >t ac may uolc ih?- new btor? reared by Mr J. T. Butler of it! i'iroway, :n. u., on the lot purchased from Mr. W. B. Carter. Mr. Holler has kept a fine line of general merchandise hero which has been carefully managed by Mr. Z Ko^s, a hustling and very energetic business man of Brunswick couutv, N C. This branch of business has been a great help to the people of this community, which, they of course, heartily appreciate Leaving Mr. Butler for the present wo will vNit Mr Wrn. Carter, there vre find he has built a very hand some dwelling which marks his rapid progress this season Mr Carter i one of t he managers of the (irm ?( < urter & ' o , who have been do ing a successful increantilc business here for several years. Mr. B. G. Gil more is building some very nice stables and shelters which wil add much to the comfort of hi-, stock as well as to the value and looks of his premises. Mr. Gil more is a hustler and a good neighbor. He* don't fail to make a success of his farm. Mattle. Editor Herald: There is some sickness in our midst. Several have lately been vaccinated. The Simpson Crook school is progressing nicely under the management. of Mi?Q O/.oi'J \A7r>>./ ! Mr. Young N. Gore, of Molli?, N. C., visited friends here last Saturday and Sunday. Messrs. D. Russ and W. H. Sowles, of this place, went to Whiteville on business last Monday, (yesterday.) Mr. Clarance Raker, who is teach i ing off, spent Saturday and Sunday with his parents here. Judging from jour last week's correspondent from this place, Mr. Cannon must have raised a lot of corn this year to hare crushed his barn to the ground, Mr. Cannon says it was not the quantity of corn that caused the sleepers to break?% they were of short straw pine and were rotten. The writer from Lake Swamp is about three-thirds right about some of the agents. Good books can be bought of preachers and colporters for much less monev. I make a move, and second the motion that our next session of the Legislature tix a plan by which the patrons of the State Dispensary in dry counties get their stuff prepaid less the connt.y's profits. This would prevent the dispensary from being reopeued and perish the blind tigers and constables and reduce taxes. But lets have a new court house and jail and keep Johnson at home. December 12. \dyjo Joe Kuss. Adrain. We are having rainy weather for the past few days. Several of the farmers in this section are hauling crossties to Adrian. Miss Bright Lewis spent last Saturday night and Sunday at Mr. Louis Booth's. Mr. Gilbert Cartrette is expecting to put ud a mercantile business at Baker's crossing next week. Miss Susanna Jordan paid Miss Bright Lewis a pleasant visit recently. At the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Cartrette on last Wednesday night several of tne young folks had ? : - - -'_/i J t* jjtrttuuii aiiu repuneu a pleasant time Mr G. T. Sessions was off several days last week on business. Being cold on last Sunday morn ing, Mr. Elbert Allen and Miss Eva 1 Booth took a pleasant ride around by Home wood. The Allen school is progressing nicely under the management of Miss Susanna Jordan, and the Booth under the management of Miss Bright Lewis. Mr. and Mrs. Enoch Booth paid Mr. and Mrs. G B. Cartrette a plea?ant visit recently, Puella. A tearful Fate. It is a fearful fate t) have to endure the terrible torture of Piles. "I can truthfully say," writes Harry Colson, of Masonvillc, la , "that for Blind, Bleeding, Itching and Pro- * trnding Piles. Bucklen's Arnica r Salve, is the best cure made." Kditor Herald: As ! have not seen anything from this section through our good old pages in a long time I thought I would give you a lino or two if it d?n 't find it s way to the waste basket. Health vory good at present only a plenty of measles. Our farmers are beginning to lix up their farms. Our mill man, Mr. Hardee, is tearing up the logs. He is a hustler. Joe Parker U building a fine two story house near here. L L.Todd has accepted a position with the A. 0. L. K. K Co., and has employed Miss Francis Cause in his stead at home. Well when you talk about your farmers It is well enough to bring some of our farmers into it too J. D. Causey one of our hustling farmers, made one ear of corn 11 inches long. SI 1-2 inches around and weighed 1 1-2 pounds. Come on boys who can beat it. Come hoys* and lets write some good letters to our go??d ?>ld Herald and don t linv. -i? much v -ding an" so m i v run ( .?. in 11. 1 notice gome ot the cor esp ? dents letteio and they ure filled up with n >thing but Mr sound so lias gone vLitiug I or Mr. or Miss so and m) have best) visiting. I have noted from time to time articltfsivifi your paper in favor of building a new" court house and very little;or none on' building roads, which I think is far more necessary than a new court house. Of course the^eourt house does not hold all the people wh#- #o to hear sensational trials but it holds all who has any business there and it can be made to do for some years till the county can build some de cent road8 so the people can yet to town. Now, Mr. ICditor, which do you think the wiser?spend $25,000 on a court house which we i/ct no dividends from and will take? at least $1500 per year to pay the interest, or spend the same on the roads leading from Conway and make good roads in every direction which will return *-ttr jr* v? ?. ~ ^ ~ it V r\f\ o?ri v diio w m over toeni 1UU per cent dividend yearly? Not only will the county benefit by good roads but it will be the making of Con way as the farmers will continue to patronize other markets as long as present conditions continue The nearer you get to Conway the worse the roads gets and when you got in town the sand makes heavy pulling for an empty wagon.
