OUR COF Adrian. As 1 have not seen anything from this section in a jjood while, 1 will write a few words. We would like, for seme ^ood writer to write for this section. Health is very trood at present. Mrs. W. 11. Phipps of North Carolina is visiting relatives and friends in this section. Fodder pulling is over and cotton picking has be#uu. Mr. 1). YV. Thorn pkins killed a lar^e rattlesnake having eij/ht rat ties and a button. lie killed one some time ago live feet four inches lontf, and ei^ht inches round Mr. S. (?. Lewis of Columbia, S. C., was in this section last week hunting up hands* for the cotton mills. Mr. Lewis said that the farmers would j^et a pood price for their cotton if they held it. No weddino bells to report at this time, but think there will be some M Hill. Mr. Editor, we hope that evil whiskey will be voted out. There is many a poor mother grieved with trouble about her sons drinking, and when it comes to little boys seven or eight years of age getting drunk, I think it a shame and groat eurso to those who give the drink. Go to Messrs. (5. W. and G. T. Sessions for bargains. A Friend. V irjf o. The potato crop is likely to bo very good thisyearin this section. Corn fairly good as was the tobacco while the cotton is short bad to what it was last year both in acreage and yield. 11. M. Alford and family of Toddvillc visited his brother, J. M. Alford here Sunday. Mr. Dunn of the Martin Logging Co, passed through here on Saturday last. The Virgo school is progressing well under t he management of J. \V. Alford. The enrollment is above forty despite the busy season. Lot's all vote on the dispensary question, some for it, some against it, but each voter has a right to his own opinion?a right to cast his vote according to his own opinion too. So lets don't be blaming, quartering and contending with our neighbors about the liquor. If the good preachers could keep their consistent members away from the dispensary, and the consistent members and all other church people would quit drinking tho stulV, then would not the institution go down and out for lack of patronage? Would not that be the easy way to vote it out? Wonder how many signed a petition against it who have not since then bought and drank therefrom. FOOT. Joppa. The health of t his community is very good with the exception of a little sickness. Mr. Hurt Grainger is very ill at this writing. Mr. Walter Dawsov was in Conway Saturday on business. Mr. Cyrus Dawsey is spending a few days at home now. G. f). Citizen Replies. Ml* lilllitw 1 font at! if 1 i ..... iVVi IVO 11 ? villi 11X1 posing to ask any more of your time and space, but 1 hope you will bear with mo as 1 feel it my duty to reply to our competent writer (Mr. L. i\ Roberts.) I did not intend having a controversy, I sirnnly wished the public to know that "our writer" had misrepresented the community as to the dispensary question, but possibly he thought as he had to do our writing, lie would have to cast our ballots too, were they cast, but we are going to save him that trouble. He says he abhors drunkenness as much as Johnson, Edwards or myself. Now if he does, he is like the little boy's star?has a mighty poor way of showing it. 1 infer "our writer" was alluding to me as playing the part of the gnat on the bull's horn. If that was true, 1 had much rather play that part than that "of the bobtail fiec in the big meat house" as he has done. As for "our writer's" statement concerning the public schools, I have nothing to sa>, only 1 had rather a child of mine would never learn the alphabet than to learn to drink whiskey. If we cannot get school money through good princinles. let's do without it, thereby avoid putting temptations and setting evil examples for the rising generations. "Our writer" says he is neither for the dispensary nor against it. "No man can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else ho will hold to the one and despisethe other. Ye cannot serve Clod and Mamon. Now I hope that this i.* the last chunk that I will be forced to chunk at that beautiful tree "our writer" has compared himself to, but as long as the tree keeps yielding, chunks are sure to be thrown. Cotton is opening rapidly and the two gins here will oe kept busy for some time, to t ome. Husiness will be more lively, as tobaccif, cotton ami lisli are ready for market. Some interesting timber deals have becu made recently. Nathan Bellamy visited his sister, Mrs. J. L. Hell, Saturday. Itev. Thos. Hell has a few eases of small pox to nurse. L)r. Kafer and I T. Slip's of Myr tle Heueli, Miss Mary Nixon of New Horn. N. C., and Misses Kllnn Nixon and Mary Cart ret to of Cherry (J rove, were visitors at the home of (J. C. Suggs on last. Sunday, We are glad to see I)r. Sloan up again. Rain and cooler weather would be appreciated. Sy. l:l(1orad?. Health is generally good at present. Farmers are picking cotton and rejoicing over the good price. J. .1 Faulk was in this section recen 11 v. H. L grainger is very ill at this writing. Our most prominent school teacher, N. M. Todd has a large enrollment of pupils. Mr. H. M. Chestnut was visiting friends in the Neek section recently S. C. Core was in the Neek the first of the week * S. A Core and Willie I). Stevens of the Kldorado section were in Conway the latter part of the week. If tobaeoo is low, I hope that the farmers will gain it back on their cotton. What has become of Meter Hiukv-n? I think he is mistaken in the num bor of schools that N. M. Todd taught at Aligator. It is nine instead of four. Two Friends ? ? Wit in pee. Fditor Herald: ? Please allow me space in your valuable paper for a few items. The health of this eonununit y is somewhat improved. We were indeed sorry to note the death of Capt II T. Williams. There are not many such men to be found. The bereaved have our sympathy. The writer is suffering from the effects of a blood ulcer and has not walked a step in ten or t .velve days. I hope Mr. W. A. Bell will soon be out again. We are gird to know Misses Nora and Lula Thompson are out again after several weeks of confinement with continued fever. The continued fever is abating some in this community. P. B, ^? Marlow. Rev. Asa West of Soeastee, preached a very interesting sermon last Sunday at Collins' Creek. As all know that our pastor is dead. Mr. Robt. M. Floyd, "colporteur" of Mullins, S. C , was in our community last week. lie has won many friends that will be glad to welcome him again in their homes where his presents were highly esteemed by the small children as well as the larger ones Mr. Hallie Prince of Conway, accompanied by his mother, Mrs R M. I have been employed by Mr. Weeks ever since Jammry until An ^ust the 17th, and I can truthfully say, i never dealt with a more honest man than Mr. Weeks. He is trustworthy, reliable in all of his transaetions I would have been with him yet, ii the health of my f mily would have allowed, and 1 ( was never expecting the honor that Mr. Tyler was.
