It is reported that, in ail, the Japs have raised TO sunken Russian ships. It's all the same to them: they can raise em or sink 'em just as the occasion heppeus to demand,?The State. The Horry Warehouse generally presents a busy appearance, showing that it is selling its full share of the tobacco this year. We have heard no complaint with the prices realized on this market so far. The world likes best the man who always looks on the bright side and is always sustained by hope no matter what his condition, no matter how dark his prospects Such a man is a delight to his fellows and will be loved by them while his morose and grumbling brother will be shunned by mankind. Those who arc constantly violating the law themselves, show poor policy when they begin to institute criminal proceedings against others, who may have violated ir. like manner. It is a true saying, That those who live in glass houses, should not throw stones, and it applies as well in this case as in any other, The present rate at which the tmvn ic hniMliw. .....1 ~ ?: : ~ ? v ? ?? io v/uiivu n^; ii i i v.i IU ? 111 ^ 15> N L' I \ gratifying. What we want to see however is the establishment of more and varied manufacturing establishments, and the erection of nice dwelling houses. The scarcity of homes to rent is one thing that will keep many people away from the town. The business couducted by the Waccamaw Line of Steamers between Conway and Georgetown and other points up aud down the Waccamaw has vastly increased since Capt. H. | D, Williams took charge of the bus* iness many years ago. One of the results of this vast increase in freights has resulted in the building of the new passenger boat now almost completed atul which will before long be ready for initial trip to Georgetown and return. Everything points to this fall as a good season for trade. The tobacOA Ko o ? - 1 wy i uuo utru ui 11ji u^r vury prices us compared with the prices ot' previous years, and it is thought by many who ought to know what they are talking about, that the price of cotton will remain pretty good, and those farmers who have not already disposed of all of their last year's crop, may have a chauce of yet doiug so at a living price. Without a serious breakdown in the market this fall, the farmers will meet their obligations as a general rule, and it will be a good year for the merchants and other business men Those who hold opposing views on the dispensary question will do well to contlue themselves within proper limits in their arguments, because it does not pay men to make enemies of one another over a political question. As to any and all questions of this kind men have been differing in their opinions ever since t ]?r> IVi il-l/l Vvr>iron o ..<1 u ...? .. ?. ... UVSIIII, UUU lUl'lC will Ot1 differences of opinion as long as men live in tlie world. Ask a man the direct question us to whether a man is entitled to his own'opinion or not and he will answer in the affirmative, yet ia argument this common right is forgotten sometimes and men actually fall out with a brother and think hard of him for the remainder of thOir lives, from something that has been said in the heat of argument. Think well before you speak, and always be willing to accord to others the rights of free thinking which you claim for yourself. The liquor problem is one over which men have differed perhaps more than about any other when viewed as a matter connected with civil govern, ment. All sorts of solutions have been tried but as often failed to solve the difficulty, and men are differing over it still. Dt; \DLY MOSQLITOES. What has caused so inanv inosquitoes in Conway this vear? Some claim that las* year, an ! for some years before that time, a mosquito was unknown at their places of residence but that thev have been pestered by them uo little ll> > summer. Several explanations have been ottered among others that the mosqui; toes are a revolt of 'lie wet weather and the open drains of the town where water has been standinir for some time. We are not certain that the cause can be laid entirely to the ojxm ditches, but it seems reasonable as an explanation for the increase cf the mosquitoes, and it is reasonable to sav that a proper arrangement of the ditches and drains about town so that the water would uot stand in them would decrease these carriers of disease. It is n >t disputed since the discovers - and exjKTimeuts of recent years ; that the mosquito is a carrier of fever j^erms, and thai almost all fevers may be laid at the door of this small but troublesome insect. In [taking precautions against the spread of yellow fever, the largo cities havo declared war against the, mosquito and oil has been used on, the surface of drains and pools where ! they would be likely to breed. No! town can be safe from the ravages of fevers where no attention is paid to good drainage and mosquitoes are allowed to breed in the pools and | open drains and stagnant ditches. Towns as well as individuals often neglect those little precautions that c*ost hut little, hul which if done in time, would save a larger expense and perhaps sav?> life. Good health is a consideration that is too often underestimated, un*il finally ill health and death is the natural result. If there is anything the town authorities can do in the matter of good drainage, those in charge of the matter should get together and do it as quickly as possible. Delay may bo dangerous especially in the face of repeated warnings. That great results cannot be accomplished is no argument in favor of inaction. Whatever can be done, should !m? done, no matter how little it may appear. As stated la>t week, in reference to the death of Capt H. D Williams, he was a man who paid strict attention to his duties in life, and was consequently not as widely known as he might have been anions people who had no occasion to becoue associated with him in business transactions. Hut to those with whom he came in contact, Capt. Williams was esteemed as a dear friend. He had nothing but good will for everybody, and he never interferred with matters that did not concern him. By his death Conway has lost a good businessman, and the Waccam&w Bine of Steamers, as a corporation, has lost a leading spirit who was familiar with every detail of its business. It is not often that you hear talk of new strawberry fields this year. The bad luck of last Spring is enough seriously to retard the trucking business in this county and elsewhere. There is no assurance that conditions will be different next year, and new farmers are slow about en gaging in the industry. Well, everything has to have its drawbacks, and perhaps the strawberry industry is not an exception to the rule. It may bo that next year will see a fiue crop and plenty of ears to haul the fruit, those who plant 11 av make money, and by another season the industry in the Carolinas will have gained all that it has lost. Timb has been when the travelling salesman through Horry county : found it to be the best place in the world to sell ranges, organs, and such like merchandise on the instalment plan at very high prices, taking notes for most of the purchase money and a chattel mortgage on the property to secure tho notes. But the farmers are finding out that in this way the\ are made to pay about twice the value of the article purchased, and that they very often get an article of inferior value and not having the qualities as represented by the salesman. They are learning to watch the slick tongue J fellow who comes up with a fine span of horses, puts up for the night, and shows a disposition next morning not to depart until he has made a sale of his range or other article. They pay well for their hor*e feed and all that, but they are sure to stop with the man who is in need of what they have to sell, and they know how to use pleasant language and hold out inducements thai are hard to resist, The farmers are finding that the cheapest way to purchase thes? things is to wait until they have the money in hand with which to pav down, and then they can buy fron the home mere!, mt or the distant supply house at about half what the} pay the travelling represent ^ ivos The farmers of Ilorry county are in telligeot as a people an J they art leariwjg more and more and becom ing wiser as time passes along.
