The young child of Mr. and Mrs,
.James A. Norton passed away last
Friday morning after a lingering
illness and tlio interment took place
on the following day. The sympathy
of the entire community is
extended to the bereaved parents.
? The Horry Hussars have been
assigned to the 2nd regiment infan
try as company "II." Capt. C. J.
Epps recently went to Columbia in
relation to the matter of the assign^-inentof
the Hussars. The company
is perfectly satisfied with the arrangement.
?A series of meetings will begin
at Camp Swamp church on the Saturday
night preceding the fifth Sunday
in this month. The pastor, the
Uov. S. J. MeOonnell will be assisted
by the Uev. II. H. Singleton of
the Hucksvil'o circuit and other
ministers.
?On account of the 1th of July, a
legal holiday, the supervisor and
his board held their regular meet-1
ing on Wednesday of last week, and
audited the claims that hsd been
laid over from a former meeting,

?There was an examination at
the court house last Friday for a
scholarship at Winthrop College,
and Messrs. Hell and Host were in
town for the purpose of holding

?Dr. K. W. McCord will leave

In 1887 James II. Chadbourn completed
the lirst railroad ever built in

Coast Line While he now owns the
Conway, Coast iV Western individually,
there is nothing that can prevent
him from selling out to the
Coast Line just- as he did in the other
instance. It is thought by many
that this is the intention and that
the road will never be completed
further than Cool Spring in this
county, but we know nothing of the
truth of these assertions. It is I.oped
by everybody that the road will
not j,'et into control of the Coast
Line as this would blot out all hopes
of opening up new sections of the
county that are now sutVerino for
transportation facilities.
The new owner of the road left for
home last Friday after having remained
here for several days to com
plete t he deal.

(1. Kaymond Merry, the man, who
as Superintendent of Education,
robbed Marion county out of thousands
of dollars, and tied the State

week at Toddville.
With him was a woman and they
passed as man and wife giving their
names as Merry, but leaving olT the

river a Mr. Dew of Marion county
recognized Merry and told the Captain
of the boat who ho was. The
woman with him was not his wife.

counts and lined in a total of $35.00
or 50days hard labor. Arthur Small
was tried for whipping a negro trirl
and was fined in the sum of live dollars.

and was fined in the sum of $3.00.
There was another case against Jas.

raising disturbance, but this was
laid over until regular warrants

the dispensary. It is the sentiment
of our community to do away with
the dispensary, and when we got rid
of it, we want the ''Ihiy Hum" business
done away with too. There is
a law to protect us and we shall do

We are informed by J. C Spivey
a member of the executive committee
appointed to obtain signat ures to the
petitions asking for an election on
the dispensary, that up to last
Tuesday about six hundred names

estimated to be about one thousand,
this number being sullicient to remove

in thought, and made a great speech

New Industry at I.oris.
Mr. W. I). Hickman, manajfor of

near Doris, S C, was in the city last

They have started a cannery for the
purpose of canning the fruits and
vegetables raised on the farm. A

generally sold at the stores and put
up in other States.
Industries like this are bound to
thrive in Horry county. All that is
necessary is to establish them and
push them. Success comes almost as
matter of course. The Roris section
of the county is one of the finest in
the eountyand onoof the best places
that could be found for the establish
ment of a cannery. Loris was in
corporated a few years ago and she
is annually becoming of more and
more importance as a business ecu
tor.

?Thocaso of the State against
Ward was tried in the court house
here last Tuesday by magistrate
Daniel Grainger, both sides being
represented by attorneys. It was
claimed by the prosecution that the
heiis at law of the late M. J. Ward
had entered on land belonging to
F. P. Bordeaux after notice from
the owner prohibiting the same.
The jury was composed of the following
gentlemen: J. M. Richardson,
S. P. Hawse, Ed Marsh, W. II.
Chestnut, J. S. Battle and R. R.
Nicholas. Tho arguments were
commenced in the forenoon and eoneluded
in the afternoon at Ho' clock.
The jury after remaining out for
some time failed to agree and a mistrial
was ordered. Several people
of the Warn pee section were in town
to attend the trial. After the trial
the warrant was withdrawn,
The Picnic on Pee Dec.
The people in tho Pee Dee section,
in the vicinity of Cedar Grove, had
a picnic at the cross roads last Friday,
attended by a large crowd of
people who enjoyed themselves. Invitations
had been extended to friends
in Conway and quite a nunibsr attended
from here, among them the

A ROMANTIC WEDDING.
Miss MuRjric Epp? of Cades Dccomes
Mrs. M. P. Davis.
Early on the morning of tho 4th
of July in the little town of Cades
there was a wedding. Just as the
sun began to make his apecarance
over the eastern horizon, two happy
young people met at a minister's
house in that quiet little town. They
were Mr. M. P. Davis and Miss Maggie
Epps. The good minister soon
knew their mission and while many
pooplo in tho peaceful little village
were still slumbering, he read the
pretty vows, which made them man
and wife.
11 was one of those romantic runaway
matches and took their many
friends by surprise, a pleasant sur
prise. Mr. and Mrs. Davis boarded
the morning train, passing through
Florence and spending the day in
Darlington. From there they went
to Conway where they will make
their home.
Mr. and Mrs. Davis weie in the
city last night going back to Cades
to spend a few days with the bride's
parents before starling out on life's
journey. Mrs. Davis was a popular
young girl of Cades and her many
friends wish her much happiness
She is still in her teens and it was
because of her youlhfulness that
the wedding had to bo a runaway
one, Mr. Davis is an "enterprising
young man and has many friends.?
