THURSDAY MAY, 25th 1U05. The luck of refrigerator cars for the shipment of the strawberries this year lias never been satisfactorily explained and probably nover will bo. It would hardly seem that the transportation companies would bring about such a thing willfully as it appears to be to their interest to encourage the business, but it must be remembered that monied corporations sometimes have purposes in view that cannot be understood and foreseen by the common man. * * * The progress Conway is making theso days is encouraging to that extent which should enthuse every business man hero and cause him to nut forth nITovfa f??. ?*:n v ... XKJI 91111 better things. For a long timo the town was dead. It took almost acres to boat it into the heads of some that Conway had possibilities. After desperate struggles there was an awakening some half a dozen years ago. Things were started upward and have been on the upward tendency ever since. The tobacco industry did its part. A colony was planted and Conway is fast becoming one of the great trucking centers of the future. New enterprises have sprung up on hitherto barren sands where nothing was ever looked for. Brick and mortar and the carpenter's square and hammer have accomplished wonders in ^thc appearance of the place. Greater improvements are now easier to accomplish. To reach still greater results it is only necossary to keep everlastingly at it. -The good work is just ahead. * If * * Onk of the worst of all men in creation is he who is forever finding fault with the way his neighbor's business is conducted. Nothing has over been done or ever will be done # that this man cannot do better. Nothing that is evor done for him ever suits him because nothing ov^ or comes up to his immensely high ideals of perfection. He is always bcSWU!'and always sees further into the mysterious future than anybody else in the woru*. hf, any misfortune come to you, if you fail in any undertaking, this smartest of mankind always exclaims "I know it would happen, yes I told you so!" There arc plenty of his kind who know far better how to run a newspaper than the editor does. Instead of supporting the paper of his town that has done moro toward the public good in one week than tho "know all" has done in his entire life, and moro than he ever will do, ho goes about speaking all the time of its imaginary faults and trying to defame it in every way ho can. If you observe such a man vou see that he generally has less of this world's goods, has fewer bviends, and accomplishes rs. v*fnan his much tplked of jtCT^Irs'. ft While he is talking and findin?*Yault the other man is at work trying to do something and watching his own concerns. I have beon overseer on that section of road for three years, and this makes the fourth and 1 never have had any trouble with any or e on the road until W. Crops in our section are generally small for the season. Farmers are having a hard battle with the grass, Mr. autl Mrs. II. W, Mishoe, Miss Lula Mishoe and Jesse Mishoe of Hurley visited our section last week. Mr. and Mrs. F. R. Booth were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. K. L. Mishoe on Sunday. Fred EIuxof Conway, spent Sunday with parents and friends. George H. Uabon, one o' our oldest citizens, has been quite ill for some time. Some of our people who wont to Tabor, N. C., and other places to pick berries have returned home. Some of us have beer, looking forward to the 4th of July when we would get a ride on the new railroad to Myrtle Beach. How about it? Farmer. T odd ville. Miss Costa Long was here a few days ago. W. J. Howell of the logging force of Conway Lumber Co., was here Saturday. He has had several years experience in the logging business and is very efficient. One by one, the upper counties are voting out the dispensary. It seems that our great moral institution is doomed. There is an effort to close our local dispensary. The citizens have sent a petition to the county Board, 18.r> to 2 in favor oT closing, and we understand that the Board has promised to close it up. L. W. Cooper, who is doing a hustling mercantile business at Klondyke, was in town Monday. There has been a general reduction in the acreage of cotton, while the acreage of tobacco has been in creased in this section. The farinors here are striving to make a full crop of corn, peas and potatoes. Mrs, C. S. Oliver and Miss Leila Oliver of Greenfield, spent Sunday here. Forecast. Hex News Crops arc looking bad generally, grass and woods are plentiful. Mrs. Frances Noble of Enterprise, has been spending a week with her brother, S. VV. Vaught and family on Buck Creek. Hiratn Bee and Miss Ordra Smith attended quarterly meeting at Pireway, N. 0., on last Saturday and Sunday. Vance Carter and his sister Miss Ollic, spent last Sunday evoning at S. W. Vaught's. The old Veterans who attended the ^reunion from here enjoyed it very much. E. L. V. ? -? Lorls. Ibis's and worms are playing havoc with the corn. It is said the early bird gets the worm, but who got it out of the strawberries this spring or was it a bug this time. Which do we need the worst, a bridge across the Waccamaw river or a court house? We need both, give us one or both. Some of our farmers are planting corn or peanuts in their tobacco ground, we think this a good idea, because we seldom see a hog with a cigarette in his mouth. Oliver last week in favor of the bridge. 1 think that the bridge is needed, and the people on the western side of the river need not grumble because they will have to help to pay for the bridge, for the people 011 the eastern side of the Waccamaw river did help to pay for our bridges 011 the western side. J guess we all know his name, but wo do not know his intention. lie is in favor of something in the near future, and I yet sav it is just as unjust for the northern taxpayers to pay, or help pay, as it is for only a few townships to pay the It.
