A x-y U IT V IUVJ 11 tlio blUll' tUC U'UUUUU season will be open and everything now points to reasonable prices. * * * Tiik frequent showers of last week made it too wet for the farmers to plow in some sections near the city. ? * # The lack of refrigerator cars to take care of the strawberry crop should be a lesson to somebody and if they are wise the occurrence will never be repeated. # * * Somic of the people are in favor of the court house and jail no matter what the plan for raising the money, since the means be reasonable and legitimate. Others want the new buildings but differ as to the means of raising the money propos ed. A few are opposed to it in any way. A majority of the people, we believe, would vote for it if a suitaliln nnl ? 1 1 * % 9 w.v were paaseu uy tuo I jegislti-1 turo. * I * * If ever the enforcement of a vti* grant law were needed anywhere in this State it is needed here. One who will tako tho trouble to observe the situation and condition of affairs now existing will be surprised at tho great number of people he will find iu tho town who are perfectly idle?who have nothing in the world to do, and no visible means of making a living. Nearly always there is a crowd of colored boys wandering and loafing about the streets or loitering about the street CQrners and store fronts, but no matter how much you are in need of some one to do a small job of work; toliiro them you cannot. They will not work for any amount of money. These negro boys will run an errand, or carry a valise or par^ ccl for you for five cents, provided ~ ? they do not have to go too far, but this is all that they will consent to do. They cannot be hired to do anything that calls for the least bit of labor. The only remedy is to enforce the vagrant law and let them understand that when they are offered work, be the job ever so small, they must do it or go to jail. Once, about a year ago, three negro boys were sitting down near tho side walk playing ''muinple peg" when one of | the ward?i)8 of the town tried to hire them for a few hours. They all refused to be hired and the warden promptly sent the town marshal to arrest them and put them to work on tho streets. One of them ran away and waB not caught, but the two others were given hoes and compelled to weed up grass for the balance of the day. They presented a sad sight as they were marched off to work with tears streaming down their faces, but the incident had its effect for some time ufterwards. To allow them to congregato and lie around stores generally breeds mischief. It has not been so long since several Of them were caught filching goods from a warehouse where they had been allowed to stand around for some time.. Matlic. Rain I rain! plenty of rain! Raker failed to fill his appointment last Sunday at Oak Grove. Poo Dee. Pleasant Meadow. The health of the community is generally good at present. The farmers are ergaged with General Green. Crops in this community are very fine at the present time. Wo have been having very rainy weather for about two weeks. Matthew Causey was at Loris last Saturday. J. II. Causey, J. F. Pridgen and family were visiting friends and relatives in the Mt. Olive section on last Suuday. The farmers in this section are grumbling yet about tho low prices of cotton and tobacco. 1 am r.o adviser but 1 say, let's hold our crops until they get ready to pay us for thotn. I saw in my last week's paper that some gentleman from Long Branch is not in favor of the bridge across Waceamuw at Star BlutF, but I say let's bridge the river, so that we can cross it, then we can go to the beach without having to pay from 2f> to 50 cents ferrage every time we cross. Hhouark died at the residence of L. V. Todd on Friday April 28th 11)05. lie was an ex Confederate soldier and leaves four children and a host of friends to mourn his death, lie was laid to rest in tho Pleasant (Jrove cemetery on Saturday evening to await the resurrection morn. J. Death of John D Thomas. Mr. John D. Thomas died at M;iy nam, Texas, on April 17th 11105, at the ape of (50 vears. Ho was born near Little River in Horry county, lie moved to Texas twenty nine years ago where he has been a successful farmer ever since. lie leaves a wife and ten children in Texas, two brothers and four sisters in Horry county. He has beep a member of the Missionary Baptist church for the past several years of his life. A Brother. ? Death of Dan'l Ldxe. Daniel Edge was born on March 10th, 1837. He enlisted as a volunteer in the civil war in 1801 and made a bravo sholdier always faithful to the cause. At the close of the war he returned home to this county and was married on January 19th, 1870 to Miss Virginia Jninun. He joined tho Baptist church at Sweet Water Branch about 10 yi-.u* ago and lived the life of tho faitit . | Christian. About seven years ag he joined tlio Christian Science and! remained in this until his death ; His delight seemed to be with tinpeople of Clod and ho was always ready to give a word of comfort to the way-faror. For the last few years of his life, his sufferings were great but lie bore them with patience departing this life on April 24th, 1905, He said lie was willing to go but wanted to see his baby who is in Baltimore going to school. He leaves a wife, four laughters and a host of friends to mourn their loss. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. W. S- MeCaskell at Sweet Water Branch church in the presence of a large congregation. A Friend. Death of Mrs. Dollle A. |.*wl*. The subject of this obituary was born on March the 17th 1852. Her maiden name was Shelley, daughter of Plllllll tillrtlltf ?? ' - 1 - v ?it.r was married to 1). 11. Lewis on February 3rd. 1870 , with whom she lived till she I was taken away by death on April | 16th, 1005. ( Mrs. Lewis embraced a hope in Jesus about fifteen years before she 1 left this world. Afterwards she | joined the Primitive Baptists and , her membership was at Pee L)ee. She was a firm believer in the doc- ' trine of Jesus her Saviour. | The Lord has said, "If you know . the truth the truth shall make you ' free." This freedom is from the ( bondage of sin and death and liber- ( ty in the light of our dear Lord , Jesus Christ. Thus, they that believe do enter into rest, even as God ( finished his labors in the creation. ( We verily believe that our mother < Mrs. Lewis is one of that number. Therefore, what is a loss to her ' children and husband and friends in this world iiher eternal gain. She ' said that she had died once and in that death she lived, and now she elt, that she was going to fall asleep < n Jesus and said,-"Pa, don't grieve xfter me and tell the children not to grieve," and then closed her J jyes and seemed to go to rest.
